Knocking down communication barriers!
Re-Establishing Effective and Efficient Communication Between Advisors and Students.
The Monarch nation Plan
The student perception of lack of support, information, and guidance is based upon their identified experiences of ineffective, inconsistent and or nonexistent modes of communication prior to and during the advising and major selection sessions. The Monarch Nation Communication Plan reimagines how to effectively create a student ready culture that guides students and families during ODU’s various advising and major selection phases. The Monarch Nation plan also includes support structures for advisors that enhance culturally competencies and promote an inclusive advising environment for African American and Latinx students.
Information is Not Communication in the Monarch Nation!
our purpose
Academic advising serves a critical role in determining the level of success achieved by university efforts to educate and retain their students. Effective communication skills are not only critical for advisers, but how information is disseminated impacts a student’s ability to make critical choices that can have a profound impact on their future. When communication to students is fragmented, lack clarity, and does not take in to account the student’s needs, there is an increased probability that students will dropout. For those who continue and experience a lack of clear academic and career goals, a sense of belonging, wellbeing and academic success diminishes and isolation, lack of direction, and uncertainty increases. The Monarch Nation Communication Plan’s purpose is to create strategic and impactful pathways for communication between students, families, advisors, and faculty, and to increase the effectiveness of academic advising and major selection.
