The Research Experience for Undergraduates program (REU), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), provides hands-on learning and experiences to undergraduates. This specific program at Old Dominion University specializes transportation behavioral sciences. The program offers training and mentoring opportunities to prepare students for graduate school and careers in transportation research and industry. Students majoring in Psychology, Engineering and related fields are encouraged to submit applications! To ensure broader diversity, groups currently underrepresented in STEM (women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) are also strongly encouraged to apply!

Contingent on State and University public health measures, REU 2023 will be held in person, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.

Support for research activities

  • $6,000 funding over 10 weeks

  • On-campus housing (individual bedroom in a four-person suite)

  • Meal plan included

  • Travel support to and from the program (Norfolk, VA)

  • Weekly workshops and field trips

  • Opportunities to conduct original research and present findings to Old Dominion University faculty

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program

  • Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior

  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident

  • Preferred GPA 3.00 or higher

  • All academic majors and disciplines will be considered, but preference will be given to those in Psychology, Engineering, or related fields.

  • Must submit a resume/CV, cover letter (personal statement), transcripts, writing sample, and at least 1 letter of recommendation along with application.

Requirements:

  • Research full time with faculty mentor for 10 weeks, starting May 29 (program will run from May 29 to August 4, 2023)

  • Attend weekly workshops and field trips

  • Create a poster presentation at the conclusion of the summer
