Monarchs Move is supported by the Center for Movement, Health, and Disability (CMHD) at Old Dominion University's Darden College of Education and Professional Studies. Housed within the Department of Human Movement Studies & Special Education, CMHD is a training and research center focused on understanding health disparities and enhancing the well-being of disabled populations.
Monarchs Move was developed by ODU and CMHD's doctoral student, Baillie Ollila. Baillie graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology- Rehabilitation Science from UW-Eau Claire. She has 9 years of experience in adapted physical activity programming. She has experience with adapted sports, adapted dance, and teaching.
Baillie's goal in developing programming is to provide opportunities for disabled individuals to explore movement in various physical activity settings.
When you arrive to Monarchs Move, you will see a variety of stations set up around the Student Recreation Center basketball courts. Participants are encouraged to navigate the environment "carnival style." Meaning they can choose their preferred activities throughout the session.
Monarchs Move volunteers are comprised of Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University students. Each volunteer brings a unique skill set as their educational and personal backgrounds vary. This interdisciplinary approach promotes an environment that supports a safe and fun environment for community participants.
