Visualizing History Through Research Resources
Visualizing history through research resources is an ongoing participatory work that showcases local history through student contributions. This project began as part of a proposal for a Vermont Art’s Council Grant for the Albany Community Trust. Based on listening sessions I conducted, it was clear that the local community wanted to see work from their children and have their histories celebrated. Barn quilts that told those stories made by school children is one way to showcase student work while they learn valuable skills, preserve local histories and add aesthetic value to public spaces. The pilot project was completed by students at Glover Community School in Glover, Vermont. Their story quilt squares will be displayed in school and at a Glover Historical Society event in the future.
This project is a two month long unit designed for librarians to teach upper elementary and middle school students research skills and encourage creative approaches to understanding local history. Collaboration with other allied arts teachers and community members is an essential part of this unit.
I'm happy to share these lesson plans and any technical assistance that I can.
