Authentic Actions

Everyone can make a difference! Find your cause, find your voice, and make change in your world!

Taking Action for Your Cause

After you finish conducting research on your goal and compiling your research into a useful writing piece, then it's time to take real action! You may be able to use your writing to get you started in your chosen action, or you might start something completely new. Either way, the purpose is to make change, no matter how big or small, that will benefit your local and/or global community. Some suggested actions are listed below, but there are plenty of other ways to take action beyond this list. Let Miss G and Mr. C know if you have another idea that you would like to pursue. We'll do whatever we can to help you!

Write a Letter

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to spread the word and start making change is to write a letter. This letter could be sent to a local newspaper or even someone in the U.S. government. Either way, the letter should include information about what needs to be done and why. The more information you can provide to support your cause, the more likely others will follow your lead!

Make a Poster

A fairly simple way to share your concerns and try to gather support is by making an informational poster. The poster can include the cause you are supporting, the reasons why, and some ways that others can help. One poster may not make much difference, but a collection of posters placed in various locations around your community can make a big difference!

Volunteer

The most common way that people try to make immediate change is by volunteering for a group or organization that is already working on solving the problem you want to help solve. This could be something like helping a local group that cleans up roadsides and waterways or delivering meals to older people who are not able to leave their homes. In any case, big or small, getting involved and doing the work with others can be very effective at making change!

Hold a Fundraiser

Making big changes that will improve our world takes a lot of hard work from a lot of people. However, it also takes resources. The most commonly needed resource (besides volunteers) is money. By raising funds for a group or organization, you can help them get the supplies they need to do their important work. There are many, many ways to raise money, and any donation, large or small, can very very helpful!

Write a Petition

If you're trying to get others to help with your cause, one effective way to do it is to show them how many people already support the work that you are trying to do. A petition is a written document that states the cause your are working toward and then collects signatures of all those people who agree with your work. The more signatures you collect, the more convincing you can be that your work is important!

Create a Video

Like a letter or a poster, an informational video is a great way to spread the word about your cause and why you support it. It's also a great tool for enlisting others to join the cause, but don't forget to be very detailed in why others should get involved and how they can do it. The more you share, the more likely others are to join in!

Form a Group

If there's not already a group doing the work that you want to do in your local community, you can always start your own group. It will take a lot of hard work and organization, but you can do it! You just need to find others who feel the same way that you do, or start convincing people that your work is important. Many of the other items on this page will be helpful in getting members for your group, including posters, letters to newspapers, and even videos that can be shared on social media.

Give a Speech

I know, it sounds scary. But speaking to a group about your cause can be very persuasive because it allows them to see how passionate you are about the work that you're trying to do. You can also answer questions on the spot, which is something that's not possible through letters, posters, or videos. However, make sure you really know your information well, because you'll want to be able to answer those questions correctly and confidently if you want to gain support!

Create a Podcast

Podcasts are a great way to share information with people because they can take it with them and listen to it anywhere. It also gives you a chance to reach people all over the world! Write a script, record yourself sharing your learning, and then edit in some cool sound effects/music and you've gone a popular podcast ready to go!

Make a YouTube Channel

Do you like the idea of a podcast, but you're more interested in video than just audio? Do you want to create a documentary, but it feels a little overwhelming to do such a long video all at once? Making a YouTube channel allows you to have the same global reach as a podcast and to use video, but you can make short (30-45 sec) clips that act like Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about your topic!
