2020-2021 Units

Exploring Our Needs

We will be starting this year by exploring the many needs that exist in our communities and how each of those needs can impact some people more than others. We will begin this exploration by focusing on our immediate community (our classroom and school) and then broaden to our local town and state community. Our work will focus on a variety of types of needs, including:

  • Basic Resources (food, water, shelter, etc.)

  • Emotional Supports & Interpersonal Relationships

  • Social & Economic Supports

  • Health and Safety Supports

Lessons From the Past & Prospects for the Future

In order to learn how we can better meet the needs of our various communities (listed above) in just and equitable ways, we will examine how civilizations have tried to do so in the past and learn from both their successes and shortcomings. We will also examine how societies in different parts of the modern world are addressing the needs of their citizens as well. Throughout our examinations, students will choose how they will explore each topic and then share their learning with each other.

The list of civilizations students can choose to examine includes (but is not limited to):

  • Ancient Mesopotamia

  • Ancient Egypt

  • Ancient & Modern India

  • Ancient & Modern China

  • Ancient & Modern Japan

  • Medieval Europe

  • Colonial North America
