Good Times Roll

Written By: Zara Eshaghian

The Cars was a New Wave Rock band that formed in the late 1970s but became particularly popular in the 80s. The genre of music is one that they single handedly created.

If you want to listen to The Cars, their biggest hit was an album named The Cars which came out in June of 1978. Some of their biggest hits on this record were Just What I Needed, and My Best Friend’s Girl. This album, and every song on it followed the classic rock and roll style; verses, choruses and guitar solos galore. Though what made this piece of art particularly unique was the fact that it was a series of love songs. They followed this masterpiece with another record Candy-O.

The Cars album has a sound similar to the Killers, Mr. Brightside, but with a calming, vibing twist on them, something similar to the Talking Heads. They interchange the perfect amount of bass and tone behind the lead singer, Ric Ocasek’s voice. “Let them leave you up in the air, let them brush your rock and roll hair,” Ocasek sings in his utterly unique voice coming through in the song Good Times Roll. Another song, Moving in Stereo, pulls in a psychedelic sound, nearly pushing the boundary to baritone lyrics. The Cars constantly chased and changed the laws of rock and roll, making them iconic in musical history.
