Q: Why does the pen on the whiteboard sometimes change color or thickness while I’m writing?
A: This happens because object recognition is on. You have two options:
Turn off object recognition → This will stop the pen from switching styles, but you’ll need to use the button in the bottom left corner to pinch, zoom, or move around the infinite canvas.
Adjust the settings → Keep object recognition on, but set it to “write with fine tip only” to avoid thickness changes. If you choose “fine tip and finger,” the board may misread your input and occasionally change thickness.
Q: What is the point of the freeze feature?
A: This feature allows you to keep the board on a specific screen while you work on something different on your laptop. For example, you can keep up the bell ringer while taking attendance and not have to unplug your device.
Q: The sound on the board is tinny. Is there a way to adjust the sound?
A: You can adjust sound volume, but you cannot adjust bass or treble.
Q: Can I do sound only and turn the board off?
A: Yes, sound only on remote. Or you can make a peace sign and pull up the settings on the board.
Q: My board defaults to Military time, how can I change that?
A: The time can be adjusted in the settings. In the top right hand corner of the screen you will see the settings wheel. If the time is off it’s because the board is not connected to the internet, and relying on the internal battery.
Q: Can I make adjustments to the home screen?
A: In the top right hand corner of the screen you will see the settings wheel. In settings you can do the following:
Change the background color to colorful.
Whiteboard > New version vs white version.
Q: The power button is red. Should it be?
A: Yes, the power button should be red. If it’s not red, it’s lost connection to power.
Q: What does the board recognize to write, erase or move?
A: Your finger acts as the mouse. The pen or thin object will write. Your fist will erase. The board recognizes thickness of touch.
Q: How do I adjust erase settings? Are there different ways to erase?
A: The eraser has two settings. You can erase objects individually or the whole page. If you hold down the erase option, it will pop up with options.
Q: When I go to write on the board, it turns into graph paper. How do I stop that from happening?
A: This has to do with the pen sensitivity of the person writing. This can be adjusted by going into the settings and changing it to ‘write with fine pen or fingers’. Here is a helpful video to show you how to adjust those settings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewktILR0dUQ
Q: How do I clean the board?
A: The boards come with a box that has a microfiber cloth and cleaner. Use a microfiber cloth only. If you are going to use a cleaner make sure the cleaner has no alcohol and no ammonia.
Q: How much local storage is on the Newline board?
A: The board has 32 gigs of internal storage.
Q: Can I move files from my computer to the board without connecting to the internet?
A: Yes, you can insert a USB drive into the Newline board and save your screenshots. You can also move files from your computer to the board using a USB drive.
Q: My pens are lost/ broken. Are there alternative writing utensils?
A: Yes, besides your finger, Newline recommends using mechanical pencils without the lead or chopsticks.
Q: Will Smart Notebook work with the new boards?
A: Smart Notebook files will work on the new board however, the district no longer has a paid subscription with SMART notebook. You can save your SMART notebook files one of two ways:
Option 1: Canva
Convert your SMART Notebook files into PDFs and upload them to Canva. This is a great way to keep your content accessible and editable for classroom use. Canva is EdLaw 2D approved for both teacher and student use so that content can be turned into interactive lessons for students in the future.
Steps:
Open your SMART file.
Go to File > Export > PDF.
Save the PDF to your device.
Open Canva.com, log in with Google (ocsdny) and create a new project.
Upload your PDF and place each page into a slide or frame as needed.

A: Not at this time.
Q: Can students cast to the board?
A: Once the board is connected independently to the WiFi, yes. At this time of the installation, no.
