April 8th PD Day

The Professional Development Day, initially planned for Friday, April 26, has been rescheduled. The new date for the PD Day is Monday, April 8, 2024.

Why the Change?

The PD Day was rescheduled because there will be a solar eclipse in Ottawa on April 8, coinciding with our school's dismissal time. There are safety concerns for our students and staff who will be outside at this time because looking directly at the sun during the eclipse can cause damage to one's eyes.

For an updated OCSB calendar please visit: calendar page.

Inclement Weather During Exams

In the event of an "inclement weather day” during the high school exam period where yellow school bus transportation is canceled, exam schedules at all OCSB schools for all students will be affected (not just for school bus riders). The missed exam (or grade 9 assessment) will be written the following school day. All other exam (and grade 9 assessments) will be bumped by one day. For example, if Tuesday, January 30th were declared an inclement weather day, then all period 4 exams would be written on Wednesday, January 31st.  During a snow day, the school will be open, but exams (and grade 9 assessments) will not be written.

E-Learning Exams

There will not be any formal, supervised exams for e-learning, rather, all final exams/summative assessments will be completed by the student in the same way they have completed assessments throughout the semester. Students taking e-learning courses will receive information about their exam/summative assessment directly from their e-learning teacher.

LAUNCH 2023 Education, Career and Wellness Fair

To support career exploration and pathway planning,  grade 10-12 students across the Ottawa Catholic School Board will have the opportunity to visit a virtual education, career and wellness fair on Wednesday, November 1st. The fair runs from 9am to 8pm so students may also attend on their own time if desired.

The OCSB has partnered with the Ottawa Public, Peel, Greater Essex, Renfrew County Catholic and Renfrew County Public School Boards to provide students the opportunity to explore many post-secondary institutions, associations, employers, and unions, spanning all pathways. Students will be able to interact with representatives who will be available to answer questions through a combination of pre-recorded videos and live chats.  Students will also be able to attend live presentations on a variety of topics, including scholarship application tips, budgeting for post secondary, careers in the trades, and many many more.  Please see a complete list of presentations here.

We are also excited to announce that we will also have a keynote address by Jeff A.D. Martin, an award-winning professional speaker, a certified coach, and University of Guelph certified leadership professional.

Students will also have the opportunity to win draw prizes for participating in the fair, attending workshops and engaging with exhibitors at the various booths.

Halloween Costumes - October 31st

Halloween is just around the corner. It is important for students to have a thoughtful approach to whether their halloween costumes are culturally sensitive and appropriate. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, cultural appropriation is, “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect the culture”. Students are encouraged to consider this when putting their costume together to avoid uncomfortable situations at school or in the community. This will help ensure that Halloween is a fun event where all students feel safe and honoured. Students are also reminded that masks are not permitted.

OSTA - Bus Update

OSTA is continuing to work on resolving the busing issues facing All Saints and other west end schools.  In an effort to provide transportation for students on cancelled bus routes OSTA is making changes to several bus routes.

Beginning Friday October 27th, families with students assigned to the following routes should review the OSTA Parent Portal to view updated bus assignments and stop times.  These changes will go into effect on Monday October 30th.

Looking Ahead - Rich Summative Tasks (RSTs) and Exam Dates

High school semester 1 exams are scheduled to take place during the mornings of Thursday, January 25th to Tuesday, January 30th.

Thursday, January 25 - All Period 1 exams

Friday, January 26 - All Period 2 exams

Monday, January 29 - All Period 3 exams

Tuesday, January 30 - All Period 4 exams

It is also important that students are present and prepared on the day RSTs take place in classes.  RST dates are communicated to students by their teacher and differ by course. RSTs are typically scheduled in the latter part of the semester.

Students in gr 10-12 courses will complete final exams during the exam window. Final exams are not written in grade 9 courses. However, attendance during the exam window is required for grade 9s as RST activities will be scheduled during the exam window.

Students in grades 7&8 follow their regular schedule during the high school exam period.

Vacation and work arrangements are expected to be made around the examination timetable (Student Handbook, pg 20).

In the event of an "inclement weather day” during the high school exam period where yellow school bus transportation is canceled, exam schedules at all OCSB schools for all students will be affected (not just for school bus riders). The missed exam will be written the following school day. All other exams will be bumped by one day. For example, if Tuesday, January 30th were declared an inclement weather day, then all period 4 exams would be written on Wednesday, January 31st.

Special Statement from Dr Etches

Dr Etches, OPH Medical Officer of Health, has provided the following special statement for parents regarding fall vaccines and respiratory illness season:  October 5th Special Statement.

Congratulations Ms Vanneste!

Each fall the prime minister of Canada recognizes the important role that teachers across the country play in student’s lives by announcing the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching. The highest of these honours is for Teaching Excellence.  We’re honoured to share with you that today our very own Ms. Ann Marie Vanneste was announced as one of only 10 educators in Canada that will be receiving this award.  Ms. Vanneste will receive her award at an upcoming ceremony that will be hosted by our prime minister Justin Trudeau. Congratulations Ms. Vanneste!

For more information please see:  OCSB Video Announcement , Prime Minister's Awards Recipients 2023.

Transportation
We encourage parents and guardians to check OSTA’s website daily for both short and long term cancellations, and sign up for notifications through the OSTA Parent Portal to ensure they receive the latest delay and cancellation information.

OSTA understands the pressure put upon families who do not have transportation on a yellow bus due to long-term cancellations. As a temporary measure, they would like to provide families living within the Urban Transit Area with Single Ride Vouchers (SRV)

The application only needs to be made once. SRVs will be sent to schools every two weeks and will be distributed to students. Once service on a yellow bus or van is reinstated on a long-term basis, SRVs will no longer be sent to the school. Please continue to check the OCSB cancellation list on OSTA’s website regularly for status updates.

OSTA has also shared Walk A Block maps for families.  To view the All Saints map please click here.

New Fernbank High School Temporary Accommodation Plan and Associated Attendance Boundary Revisions

On-going residential development in Kanata West, the Village of Richmond, the Village of Stittsville, and the Fernbank Community will increase future enrolment at Holy Trinity and Sacred Heart High Schools beyond a level which can be accommodated.  Consequently, Board staff are proposing the creation of a preliminary attendance boundary for a planned future Fernbank High School, and to temporarily accommodate those students at All Saints High School.  This plan would result in changes to the attendance boundaries of Sacred Heart, Holy Trinity, and All Saints High Schools, effective beginning in September 2024.

A Public Meeting to discuss this proposal will be held on Thursday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons at Holy Trinity High School (180 Katimavik Road, Kanata).  Although not required, for planning and communication purposes please register for the meeting here Public Meeting Registration - you may also attend the meeting remotely - a virtual meeting link will be posted to the school's website in the near future.

For additional information regarding the process, please also click here New Fernbank High School Temporary Accommodation Plan Consultation

Truth and Reconciliation Week

Next week (Sept 25-Sept 30) is Truth and Reconciliation Week.  Throughout the week class and school activities will be taking place that draw attention to the experiences of Indigenous children in the residential school system. This year the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation falls on a Saturday (September 30th).  Some provinces, as well as the federal government and federally regulated workplaces will be observing the day as a holiday on Monday, October 2nd. As is the case for Remembrance Day, September 30th is a federal statutory holiday but not a provincial holiday, so school will remain open on Monday, October 2nd.

Students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on September 29th to show solidarity with the survivors of residential schools, to acknowledge our individual need to learn more about our shared history and how each of us can work to support reconciliation. For more information on Orange Shirt Day, please visit the official website: orangeshirtday.org.

Medical Forms
If your child has a medical condition (asthma, life-threatening allergy, diabetes, epilepsy/seizures, concussion/head injury) you will need to inform the school using the Life-Threatening Medical Condition Verification Form as well as the appropriate condition-specific Plan of Care form. If the Plan of Care form has been previously submitted and there are no changes, please complete the Plan of Care Annual Review Sheet only. Student Drop Off / Pick Up

With the current limitations we understand many parents will drive their child (children) to school in the morning. We ask you to please find a place off school property to drop off as our school parking lot can be congested and slow as yellow buses and special needs parking takes priority in our plan. If you are dropping off or picking up in our school parking lot please do so in the designated loop in the east end of the lot (see diagram).  With the exception of some designated special transportation vehicles, the front of the school is not a pick up or drop off zone.

Student Fee

The student fee is $30.00 per student with a family maximum of $60.00.  Payment can be made on SchoolCash Online.

Student fees are used to supplement the cost of Student Council activities, spirit building activities, field trips, awards, school clubs, teams and activities. Be assured this fee is not to cause undue hardship or inconvenience for your family.

Addressing Your Questions and Concerns
From time to time throughout the year, you may have a question about something related to your child’s education. To avoid frustration, we suggest the following pathways to assist you in resolving issues or finding answers:

Classroom Teacher: available to answer questions related to homework, assignments, behaviour, classroom rules and consequences. This should be your first step in dealing with any classroom related issue.

Resource Teacher: available to discuss supports outlined in student’s Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.s).  In addition to serving as a support for students, Resource teachers also consult with classroom teachers regarding educational accommodations and/or modifications.

Guidance Counselor: available to answer questions related to timetables, career planning, personal and social issues, special educational needs, and to suggest possible referrals to appropriate school personnel and outside agencies.

Vice-Principal: available to help you resolve issues related to student progress once you have discussed the issue with the teacher. VP’s also deal with student registrations outside of the “normal” intake times, student suspensions and issues related to conduct, attendance and truancy, report card concerns, conflict resolution, and safety and security issues.

Principal: available to assist you in resolving issues related to student progress if you have been unable to resolve those issues through discussions with the teacher and Vice Principal. Also, available to discuss issues related to safety and security, fundraising, School Council, teacher conduct and school policies.

Office Administrators: available to assist you in answering questions related to day to day functioning of the school, attendance, and referrals to appropriate personnel for various services.

We hope this helps you in determining the best pathway to getting the answers you are seeking.

Sandra Moore, Board Trustee

All Saints is supported by Sandra Moore who serves as the Zone 2 Board Trustee.  Ms. Moore serves Ward 4 Kanata North, Ward 5 West-Carleton-March and Ward 23 Kanata South.

Board Trustees are elected every four years during the municipal election. The last election was held in October 2022. When elected, Trustees become members of our school board. They provide an important link between local communities and the school board, bringing the issues and concerns of their constituents to board discussions and decision making.

Our Trustees are accountable to our school community for the decisions made by the Board. They are available and accessible to the public to address concerns from the community with respect to Board policies and procedures. They also act as ambassadors for the system, officiating and speaking at school openings and events. Trustees are ombudspersons for students and community members, advocating a wide range of issues regarding Catholic education.

Parent Action Required

Ottawa Public Health is seeking feedback to determine if they should run an immunization "catch-up" clinic at All Saints High School.  This clinic would allow students in grade 9-12 to receive immunizations (see list below) that they may have missed over the last few years.  If time allows, we may be able to open the vaccination clinic to grade 7 and 8 students after the 9-12 students have been completed.

The following immunizations are being offered:

If you are unsure about a student's immunization status, you can contact your family doctor, check via the CanImmunize App, or they will be vetted by the nurses on site on the day of the clinic.

Please note that this would be a VOLUNTARY clinic and that the school is not collecting personal information or information about immunizations. The purpose of this survey is to simply to gauge interest. Click HERE to access the 2 question survey.

The form will close on Monday, December 12 at 9:00am.

Our Focus - Building Students' Character

This year all staff members of All Saints are intentionally focusing on providing students with opportunities to learn about developing their character. We hope students and parents will connect the learning opportunities and language we use to the idea of building character as an important skill moving through the teenage years.

For our purpose Character is defined as: learners having strong capabilities in self-regulation, self-reflection, and taking responsibility for their own learning. Students should be able to think effectively, make decisions for themselves, and take ownership of their learning. Grit, tenacity, and perseverance in the face of major setbacks or negative feedback, pausing, reflecting, and adapting as necessary, and approach the issue with determination until they find a breakthrough.

All Saints - Christmas Hampers

On Monday, we will put our faith into action giving families in need a helping hand. Each homeroom will receive a Christmas Hamper Family Profile. The profile tells the students who is in the family their class is helping, what non-perishable items we need to collect and leaves rooms for students to also sign-up to donate cash, through schoolcashonline or give gift card donations.

The collection goes from Nov. 28th until Dec. 14th. If your family is in a position to do so, please give generously to our Christmas Hamper Initiative. Click HERE to donate.

This is in honour of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. On December 6th, we observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The day was established by the Canadian Parliament of Canada in 1991 to mark the tragic anniversary of the 1989 murders of 14 women at l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, who were killed simply due to them being women.

This week we welcomed the opportunity to recognize academic achievement earned last year in grades 9, 10, and 11. In short, students need to remain engaged.

If the job action continues into next week, learning for all courses will be online using Google Meet.  Only a communication from the OCSB would signal a change in the learning model.

Connecting With the School During the Strike

The education workers on strike normally support All Saints by completing many invisible, yet important tasks.

Understanding this the most effective way to contact:

If an All Saints student in your household requires a device from the school, please communicate using THIS FORM. Please consider there is a limited number of devices for the school to distribute.

Communicating Student Absences

All students will be marked in the system as present on Friday. We will provide further direction on reporting absences should labour action extend into next week. Please note that there will be a very large delay in any phone calls being accessed and returned. It is best to communicate information by email with teachers and administrators.

Grade 12 Midterm Marks

Midterm marks will be transmitted to OUAC (Ontario Universities' Application Centre) and OCAS (Ontario Colleges Application Centre) by the end of the week.  OUAC and OCAS will then transfer the marks to the individual colleges and universities that each student has applied to.  By the end of next week, colleges and universities will have grade 12 student marks and may issue offers of admission.  Students should be monitoring their OUAC and OCAS accounts, as well as their emails, for offers of admission.  As well, students should be reviewing their course marks in their OUAC and OCAS accounts to ensure that there are no errors or omissions.  Any issues should be reported to the student's respective guidance counsellor.  Please note that, if a student does not receive an offer of admission at this stage, there is no need to re-apply to their programs of choice.  Students who do not receive an offer of admission at this time will be re-evaluated for admission by the colleges and universities when the next set of marks are sent out (semester one final marks) and again when semester two midterm marks are sent out, etc.  Please refer to our graduation information webpage for valuable post-secondary application information. Be sure to scroll down the entire page.

Connecting With the School During the Strike

The education workers on strike normally support All Saints by completing many invisible, yet important tasks.

Understanding this the most effective way to contact:

Borrowing a Device from All Saints

We want to ensure all students are able to access online learning through a device students are familiar using.

We are heading into the last week of October and students are looking forward to another Spirit Week organized by Student Council.  We ask that Hallowe’en costumes be culturally appropriate, without weapons and students are not to wear any type of costume mask.

Congratulations to our All Saints High School students who participated in the Walk for Wenjack today. The school collected over $5000 in donations!

High School Parent-Teacher Interviews took place last evening and please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers if you have any questions or concerns.  7&8 Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held on November 24th. This will be another early dismissal day for all grades.

2023 Graduates - Parent Meeting

There will be an online presentation on October 27th at 6:30PM for all parents of graduating students.   The presentation will include information on important dates, fees, college and university applications, community service hours, literacy test, scholarships and awards, prom, grad retreat, and graduation.

This presentation will replace the presentation originally scheduled to take place on October 20th at 4:30PM.

The Google Meet link can be accessed HERE

GRADE 9 TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY

Take Our Kids To Work Day, Canada’s career exploration event, will take place on Wednesday, November 2nd. This event will allow grade 9 students to participate in person or virtually at a place of work.   Parents who make arrangements with their workplace for virtual or in-person activities for their child should complete and return the permission form to the school; alternatively, parents can call to absent approve their child.  Grade 9 students who come to school on that day will participate in some form of career exploration activities in class and/or consolidate their learning in their subject area(s).  Students who participate in the community will not be responsible for any additional work from school that day.

IEPs on Parent Portal:

Student IEPs are available on the Parent Portal.  Please view this video if you need assistance in finding your child’s IEP.

As we enter the traditional Canadian holiday of Thanksgiving we are given the opportunity to pause and be grateful. Being thankful is a feeling, but being grateful is an action. We continue to teach students at All Saints to show gratitude for the many blessing we have, even in the midst of challenges. This week alone All Saints students made over 600 sandwiches for the Ottawa Mission, we opened the doors of classrooms to education leaders from across the globe and we gathered for mass as a community. We hope your family is able to pause, be thankful and show gratitude with action.

9-12 Attendance Summary for September

We communicated the first monthly attendance summary for students in Grades 9-12 earlier this week via email. The intent of providing an update is to ensure we are working in partnership with you with the goal of all students achieving success. There is no action required on your part beyond reading the update. We know and understand students will miss school for a variety of reasons - and that they should miss school if ill or not able to pass the OPH screening. The communication is merely information for you to be aware about your child's attendance as the semester progresses. If you do have questions, please connect with the respective Vice-Principal listed on the letter.

9-12 Letters of Intervention

As we enter the 6th week of the school year, teachers have had time to accumulate evidence of student learning.  If there is any cause for concern for a student in a course, teachers may have already made direct contact with home, or you will be receiving a Letter of Intervention emailed directly to parents on October 13, 2022.  If you do not receive an email, then there is no concern being expressed for the student at this point in the course.

A special thanks to the teachers who gave time and energy to make the opportunity possible.

Also, in the next few weeks, our school will host a delegations of educators.  They may have seen All Saints students and staff celebrated in the news or on social media, and now they are excited to see them in person.   On October 4, a delegation of school leaders from around Canada and Peru will be visiting.

Student Information Verification

We would like to verify that your student(s) information is accurate in our system.

Their information can be found under the "General" tab on the Parent Portal. If changes need to be made, use the OCSB Student Verification Form (found on the Parent Portal under Home>Forms). Please only submit the Verification Form if there is an update that needs to be made. In order to update a home address we are required to verify the information on a current document such as a rental/purchase agreement or utility bill. No copies are kept of these documents.

High School students can also access their schedule through my.studentinfo.ca.

All Saints 7-12: Bring Your Own Device

We continue to encourage parents to purchase a Chromebook for their children for use at school. Hapara, and Google Suite continue to be primary platforms for learning. This will result in equitable access for families who might struggle with the expense.

Meet the Teacher Event: Thursday, September 15 (4:00pm-5:30pm)

We will open our doors to the community next Thursday for an opportunity for parents to connect with teachers about this years courses. This is an opportunity for parents to learn about expectations for students completing courses, including assessment and the Big Ideas of the course.

7-8 teachers as well as 9-12 teachers will be available for brief introductions in our gyms and atrium. Please note that at this time teachers have only just met students and are not able to provide feedback about assessments or progress through course expectations.

Exams (10-12) and Rich Summative Tasks (9-12)

Grade 9 - 12 students’ examinations and Rich Summative Tasks (RSTs) WILL NOT be rescheduled for holiday or travel convenience, and all appointments should be scheduled so as not to conflict with exams and RSTs. If a medical problem arises, a Vice-Principal must be contacted prior to the exam or RST.  Medical certificates will be required to permit alternate arrangements for final examinations. Questions can be directed to your student’s vice-principal.

Grade 9 Final Evaluations

There will be no exam-based evaluations for grade 9 courses this year.  Teachers will rely on Rich Summative Tasks (RSTs) for the final 30% of the student’s grade.

During the exam periods, two blocks within the exam period will be identified as credit intervention for grade 9 students (during the time that the course would usually run in the schedule). More information about credit intervention days for students will be shared closer to the exam period.  Work that is completed by students during this credit intervention time will be considered toward their final evaluation.

Grade 10, 11, 12 Final Evaluations

30% of the final grade for secondary courses is based on a final evaluation administered towards the end of the course. For example, this evaluation could be: an exam, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content. Teachers will provide more information.

Course Withdrawal

Withdrawal/Full Disclosure Date*

Semester 1 - Nov 25, 2022

Semester 2 - May 3, 2023

Opportunity to Serve Others: Peer Helpers

Peer Helpers are Grade 9 – 12 students who assist fellow students. The objective of the program is to work with students in large group settings, as well as to participate in many worthwhile student initiatives and leadership opportunities.  It is very important that when becoming a Peer Helper, the student is committed to being part of a team; therefore, the student must be willing to attend all meetings and events.  Applications are due to the Student Services Office by September 13th.

December 22nd - January 12th, 2024

This week was a busy one at All Saints.  In addition to class activities and assessments we had several Christmas celebrations taking place.  Student Council held Spirit Week activities throughout the week.  Our school community gathered on Wednesday morning for Advent liturgies that included the performance of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.  On Thursday evening guests were treated a wonderul Christmas concert hosted by our 7&8 and high school music departments.  We closed out the week with our annual Christmas Show this morning - a wonderful celebration that featured our talented students and staff.

Wishing you hope, peace, joy and love this Christmas.  We look forward to welcoming students and staff back to the building in 2024!   Merry Christmas!
