New to SPX?

Are you new to SPX?

There is a lot to explore when you join a new school. We are excited that you are joining the St. Pius X family! There are so many activities, clubs, teams, new adventures that are ahead of you. WELCOME!

If you are currently at our OCSB feeder school, Frank Ryan, some of our staff will visit your class virtually to talk with you about what it will be like at Pius and so that you can ask questions. Your school will send your information to us, so you will be automatically registered.

If you are not currently at Frank Ryan, you can "Register Now" to visit the OCSB registration information to get started.

Activities, Clubs and Teams

Check out our school website for a list of many of the clubs, teams and activities that SPX offers. If you are interested in a club or team and don't see it listed, just ask! Our staff is eager to support student initiatives.

There are many ways to learn about activities, clubs, teams, etc.

Listen carefully so that you don't miss a sign-up, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

We ask that students take the responsibility of listening and being aware of sign-ups. Not all activities will be advertised online.

Coming to School

Regular attendance is a key factor to meeting with success at school. It is important that students are at school on time, and ready to learn.

If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the school to let us know. There is an attendance line for your convenience.

If a student arrives late, a parent/guardian must call or send a note to let us know that the student is signing in late. Students who are late must come to the office to sign in upon arrival at school. Our sign-in is now digital! Students will be able to scan their digital id card in the office when needed.

For students who are signing out early, they can bring a note, show it to their teacher and then come to the office to sign out.

High School at the OCSB

If you are new to high school at the Ottawa Catholic School Board, check out this OCSB Information to learn all about the potential opportunities that await you in any of our schools.

Our Faith Family

St. Pius X High School is fortunate to work with a Chaplaincy Leader and to have a chapel within the school. We pray every morning as school begins. We also celebrate liturgies and Masses together.

An important aspect of our faith life is social justice. Activities such as our Christmas Campaign/Angel Tree and the Terry Fox Run are examples of important social justice events at SPX.

Locks and Lockers

Please come prepared with a good combination lock on the first day of school.

It is recommended that students purchase a Dudley (or similar) lock to use. Locks that have wide barrels may not fit through the locker. In addition, key locks or locks using fobs are not permitted. Lock combinations should only be given to your homeroom teacher and your parent/guardian. Do not share your combination with any students.

Students should begin to practice using their lock throughout the summer. It is one less thing to cause stress on the first day of school.

Students are expected to keep their lockers neat and tidy. Parents are asked to keep an eye out if gym clothes or lunch bags/containers have not been returning home regularly. At that point, it is likely time for a locker clean-out.

Lunch

Lunch takes place from 11:15am - noon (between periods 2 and 3).

Our cafeteria is open for students to use while they eat their lunch. The routines and rules in the cafeteria will be explained by your teachers on the first day of school.

Our servery is also available for students to purchase items for lunch. It is also open in the mornings before school and students can purchase breakfast items if they wish.

Parent Guide to High School at the OCSB

The OCSB has prepared a Parent Guide to help you to navigate the high school landscape. It is available in multiple languages.

School Hours & Timetable

Our school day starts at 8:30am. Please try to arrive by 8:20 so that you have time to get settled and be in class before the bell rings.

8:30-9:55 - Homeroom/Period 1

10:00-11:15 - Period 2

11:15-12:00 - Lunch

12:05-1:20 - Period 3

1:20-2:40 - Period 4

School finishes at 2:40. The OC Transpo buses leave pretty promptly, so it is important to be efficient when heading to the bus.

Only students who are being supervised as part of a club, team or activity are permitted to stay after school (with their parent's permission, of course).

Spirit Wear

New students are often looking for a chance to pick up some Pius merch to show off their school spirit. Sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. are sold at various times during the school year, but the best opportunity is usually early in the fall. Watch for posters, announcements and information on the website about ordering if you are interested.

Student Support - What is Available?

St. Pius X High School is full of educators who want to help you to succeed to your full potential.

We have 3 guidance counselors at our school who are available to talk with, for future planning and who can help to access other resources such as a social worker, mental health worker, addictions counselor, psychologist or community-based assistance.

We also have a resource team who provides support to our students who are working with the benefit of an Individual Education Plan. The resource team at your feeder school will help to make this connection. If you are registering from a different school (other than Frank Ryan) be sure to provide a copy of the IEP at registration.

There is also support available for our English Language Learners, reading support and there may be other opportunities from time to time.

Please visit the Student Support page for more information.

Technology

Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own device to school to use when it is appropriate to do so and as directed by their teacher.

However, students are responsible for their own valuables. Items cannot be left unattended or unsecured.

A variety of devices will work with our classroom systems. Our school board is mainly Google-based, and classroom teachers make use of Hapara to post course information. A chromebook is likely the best way to access your work.

Please click HERE for some slides with considerations about BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

Transportation

St. Pius X High School has OC Transpo service as our school transportation for students who are eligible. To find out if you are eligible, please visit the OSTA website. Students who qualify will receive a Presto bus pass to use. It is very important to take good care of your Presto pass and to register it. This ensures that if it is lost, you will be able to make arrangements to get a new one.

We do have many OC Transpo routes that are designated for SPX students, but students are also able to take regular bus routes. It is very wise to have a second route planned in case of a missed bus.
