Math Activities and Events

The St. Pius X High School Math Department focuses on creating school wide activities that engage students from all levels and encourage a greater appreciation of the world of mathematics around them. One such example is the The Ottawa Math Trail, through downtown Ottawa, taking students to a variety of local tourist attractions and demonstrating the mathematics behind creation, location, height and appeal. A second example is the St. Pius X Annual Pi Day which provides students with fun cross curricular activities that celebrate mathematical patterns in art, poetry, nature and physical exercise. A third example is the St. Pius X Annual Pumpkin Timebomb challenge which encourages students to play with estimates of how many elastic bands are needed to explode a pumpkin.
