Week 5

I hope everyone is enjoying writing poems. This week we are going to try our hand at writing 2 more types of Poems: Cinquain and Diamonte poems. I have created a workspace for this work you can go to your student portal and access it through your Hapara account.

If you are having difficulty accessing your Hapara account, the resources can be found below:

Cinquains are an example of an unrhyming poem with 5 lines. Here is a brief video which shows you how to write a Cinquain. Here are some samples and a graphic organizer to write your own cinquain poem.

Diamante poems are another example of a poem that doesn't rhyme. It has seven lines with each line having a set number of words and word type. Here is a video explaining what a diamante poem is and how to write one.

Here is another selection to read and answer questions to: Toads are Not Frogs

We will begin Poetry next week.

Week 1

Here are some ideas of things you can work on.

We started an animal research project before the break. An example of a 5 paragraph research report was shared to their Google Drives. Here it Animal report example

Once they are finished their 5 paragraph report on their animal, they can then make a google slide presentation. Basically, they will cut and paste the text from their report and paste them to a slideshow. They can then add pictures and images to illustrate their report. For example if they are describing their animals appearance in one paragraph they can add a picture or pictures to show ahat it looks like. If they are discussing the habitat they can include a picture of the animal in it's habitat and/or a map showing where in the world their animal can be found.

Student Slide Show Example

Poetry will be the next topic in writing. I will share some resources later this week.

Reading

Read and answer the questions for this story about Tasmanian Devils

Students should be reading everyday for at least 20-30 minutes. Paper books you have at home are fine. They all have access to leveled reading materials through Raz Kids. They can access through the Student Portal.

Reading material in RazKids is at each students reading level. There is a quiz after each reading passage. Students earn points for reading, listening and completing the quiz after each selection.

Scholastic has opened up their online resources for free access for their digital resources. Here is the link

The Ottawa Public Library branches are closed but you can still access online resources such as ebooks Ottawa Public Library

When possible have students read aloud as this will help them practice their fluency but assists with comprehension. As they are reading, ask them questions about what they are reading. This will cause them to think deeper about what they are reading.

For example: Why do you think they did that ? What would you have done? What do you think is going to happen next? How will the story end?
