Reading Programs

Learning to Read at Home and at School

Raz-Kids: Students will be able to access https://raz-kids.com to further support their reading development at home and at school. They will be able to listen, read and record their reading on this program on computers and iPads (or on your smartphone at home!). After a book has been read, students will complete a set of multiple choice comprehension questions. They will then have access to the next book in the program. All comprehension questions will be recorded in the teacher section of the program, to give a sense of where your child is at in their comprehension of their reading. I will be able to listen to the students recordings and use this as a form of assessment throughout the year. Passwords and login information are located at the front of your child's agenda.

Take home snuggle book program

Snuggle Book Program: Is currently closed due to Covid-19.

In addition to the library book program, your child will also be choosing a book package from our classroom library once a week. I encourage you to find a quiet time in your after school/bedtime routine ( or even early morning routine- if time permits!) to snuggle up with your child and read. Please sign off on the reading log that will be sent home with the book. Check the box if you listened to your child read the book independently, took turns reading the book together, or read the book to your child. You may also read and record books from your own home library.

Sora

This amazing resource can be found on our student portal page. You can borrow ebooks to listen to or read on your device.

Step 2 - In Sora, find the Ottawa Catholic School Board, then sign in using your Google account user name and password

Step 3 – Browse the Collections & Preferences to find just the right book

Step 4 – Track your reading achievements – see what you have on your shelf

Step 5 – Add libraries to your account such as the Ottawa Public Library where you can use your Public Library Card to gain access to even more online books

Word Wall Words

Word Wall Words: These high frequency words will be coming home each week (the first set starts on the second week of school). Please have your child read them daily and store them in a convenient spot, ex. In a binder or on the wall. We will be chanting them each week, making silly sentences with them etc. For the list of word wall words and phonics focus, please click on the word wall words link on this website.

Assessment

In addition to regular, informal reading assessments, students are assessed using a formal tool called PM Benchmark. This tool allows us to evaluate fluency, decoding skills, and comprehension. By the end of the school year, in Grade 1, students should be reading at approximately level 15.
