Oconee County Co:Writer Access at School & Home
Did your teacher tell you to use an extension called Co:Writer or Snap and Read? If so, it should already be installed on your chrome account BUT you may need to install it on your account.
Do you see the CLOUD or the Bullseye icon on your chromebook toolbar ? It should like like the image to the right. They could be colored (meaning they are turn on and working) or black (which means they are turned off). If you see either, you don't have to do anything and they are ready to use. If you don't see them you may need to install them.
The directions below will help you with this process if you don't see it listed:
- Login using student’s email. If you are using a desktop, make sure that you click the little person in the top right corner to login to Chrome. You should see the person disappear and be replaced by the student’s name.
- If you have never used Co:Writer at home or school, then it will need to be enabled by being added as an extension- follow steps below. Skip to step 3 if you already have Co:Writer ready to be used on your computer.
- Click the three vertical dots located under the “X” on the far right portion of the screen.
- Click “More Tools” and scroll over to “Extensions”.
- Click “Get more extensions” at the bottom of the list.
- Search “Co:writer” in the Chrome web store tab.
- Click the blue box that says “Add to Chrome” and the box that says “Add extension”.
- You will get a message that states that Co:writer has been added as an extension!
- Close the web store and the extension list tab.
- Open a Google Docs by going to google.com.
- Click blank document
- Double click the black “storm cloud” in the upper right corner of the screen. It may have a red dot beside it.
- If nothing happens, then minimize the screen.
- Either by minimizing the screen or if the box pops up automatically, click “sign into Google” and select your student account. Maximize the screen.
- It may take a moment but the cloud should turn to purple, which means it is ready to be used as a word prediction program.
- Begin typing and use headphones/earbuds in order to clearly hear the words and sentences being read by the computer. If you want to hear the entire selection of sentences (paragraph), then select the “bullseye” icon in the top right corner beside the cowriter icon.
- Repeat all of step 2 to add “Snap & Read” as another supportive extension.
- You should see a speaker symbol. Click this symbol and then move the cursor in front of the text that is to be read. Click and it will begin reading it aloud.
