Megan M. Allen, NBCT, EdD, is the 2010 Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the 2010 National Teacher of the Year. She is a National Board Certified Teacher who has worked in several roles in education, including 10 years as an elementary school and special education teacher in Florida. She currently supports teacher leaders as Director of Partnership for the National Network of State Teachers of the Year. Before that, she served as the director of the Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, where she envisioned, pitched, and developed two online graduate level programs to support teachers across the world in their informal and formal leadership capacities. Megan is a huge policy nerd who enjoys blogging for Education Week at An Edugeek’s Guide to K12 Practice and Policy. She is also proud to serve on the Board of Directors for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

As a 14-year veteran of the high school English Language Arts classroom, Sarah has enjoyed working with all kinds of students throughout a spectrum of courses. Believing in the power of asking good questions and creating worthy learning experiences for students, Sarah has worked to put herself in the same growth mindset she hopes to cultivate in her students. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Iowa State University in English Education and English Literature respectively. Sarah also became a Nationally Board Certified Teacher in 2005. Active in her district and state in professional development efforts, Sarah has served on numerous committees, special teams and advisory boards. In 2010 Sarah was selected at the National Teacher of the Year in which she spent the year traveling as a nationally and internationally as a spokesperson for education. Having had hundreds of engagements around the country during that time, she says that the experience has “made her feel more responsible than ever to be a better teacher tomorrow.” She returned to Johnston High School in 2011. Sarah enjoys her favorite role, though, as mom to Evan, Lauren and Zachary at home in Johnston, Iowa.

Michael Soskil is the 2017 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year and a two time finalist for the "Nobel Prize of Teaching," the Global Teacher Prize. As a STEM education, global collaboration, and technology integration expert, he has developed and presented numerous professional learning sessions for K-12 teachers, educational media outlets, and social innovators from around the world. In 2014 the White House and the National Science Foundation presented him the highest honors that the United States bestows upon math and science teachers: The Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. His use of technology as a transformational learning tool has led the Pennsylvania Department of Education as well as numerous companies and non-profit organizations to laud his innovative classroom practices. Currently he works at the Wallenpaupack Area School District in Northeastern Pennsylvania as an elementary science teacher where he helps empower students to believe they can use their learning to change the world for the better.

OCEANSIDEx Talk: Embracing Our Weirdness through Character Education
Todd Nussen is a 12-year veteran of teaching social studies at Oceanside High School and an adjunct professor of education at Molloy College. In addition to teaching, coaching and advising clubs, he has also been an integral part of bringing the, award-winning, Big History program to our district. In 2014, Todd was tapped by the educational director of the Big History Project to become one of only 25 International Lead Teachers. Since that time, he has spoken on behalf of Big History at conferences all around the country and mentored teachers who are new to the program around the world. He has also written articles on interdisciplinary learning, collaborative teaching, and activities that ask students to think critically about the future. Todd is also the author of the New York State Big History Course Plan which is used by teachers throughout the state and across the country. He has received educational honors from CUNY Queens College, the New York State English Council, and the 9/11 Tribute Center for his work on global citizenship. Last year, the Patriot Club, he helped to create to honor veterans, was recognized for outstanding community service by the United States Congress.

Audrey Miller is a National Board Certified Teachers with over 29 years experience teaching fine arts, photography, video production, and broadcasting. She also serves as a resource to teachers who wish to incorporate more technology into their own teaching toolbox. Since Audrey created the OHS Video Production program nine years ago her students have won numerous local, state, and national awards and the video program she created was featured on the New York Times website for innovative technology in the classroom. Many of her student have gone on to successfully work professionally in the video/film/broadcasting fields. Check out The Sailor Station YouTube page to watch some of the numerous original videos and short news programs created by Audrey's students that showcase the exciting events and accomplishments that take place throughout the district. She serves as a mentor teacher to help resident teachers develop their skills and serves on numerous committees within the district that aim to improve the quality of teacher training. Ultimately, Audrey sees herself as a facilitator/cheerleader for educators and students.
