Math Pathways for Grades 5-8
The diagram below shows the progression of courses that is expected for students that demonstrate success at each level. If a student does not perform well in an accelerated course or does not meet the criteria the following year, students may be placed in grade-level courses.
Course Descriptions
At the conclusion of their 5th grade year, all students are given a math placement test that assesses grade 5 standards. These scores, along with report card grades, i-Ready diagnostic scores, NJSLA scores, Cognitive abilities quantitative scores, classroom performance and teacher input are considered for Math placement in 6th grade.
Based on the aforementioned data points, students are placed in either Grade 6 Mathematics or an accelerated Grade 6 course.
The accelerated course focuses on both grade 6 and 7 standards to prepare students to take either pre-algebra or Algebra I in 7th grade.
All students in Grade 6, regardless of math placemen, will participate in the Grade 6 NJSLA in the Spring.
The curriculum for these courses can be found HERE.
Note:
The curriculum for the accelerated course will be developed during the summer. This curriculum will be posted once it is board approved.
Placement in the accelerted course in 6th grade does not guarantee placement into accelerated courses in Grades 7 or 8. Students are reassessed annually.
At the conclusion of their 6th grade year, all students are given a math placement test that assesses grade 6 standards. These scores, along with report card grades, i-Ready diagnostic scores, NJSLA scores, classroom performance and teacher input are considered for Math placement in 7th grade.
Based on the aforementioned data points, students will be placed in one of three options:
Grade 7 Math: focuses on seventh grade standards
Pre-Algebra: includes seventh grade standards and introduces some eighth grade content. The course moves at a faster pace in order to cover the additional material.
Algebra XL: includes some standards from the pre-algebra curriculum with the majority of the coursework aligning to the Algebra I standards. This course will be for a select number of students that demonstrate readiness for Algebra I. This course will move quickly as it incorporates topics from three different grade levels. Students in this course will take the Algebra I state assessment at the end of the year, and with successful performance on this assessment, will be placed in Geometry in eighth grade. Students selected for this course will be required to complete a summer course.
Students in Grade 7 Math or Pre-algebra participate in the Grade 7 NJSLA in the Spring. Students in the Algebra XL course will participate in the Algebra I NJSLA assessment.
The curriculum for these courses can be found HERE.
Note:
The curriculum for the Algebra XL course will be developed during the summer. This curriculum will be posted once it is board approved.
Pre-algebra placement in 7th grade does not guarantee placement into Algebra I. Students are reassessed annually.
At the conclusion of their 7th grade year, all students are given a placement test that assesses grade 7 standards. These scores, along with report card grades, i-Ready diagnostic scores, NJSLA scores, classroom performance and teacher input are considered for Math placement in 8th grade.
Based on the aforementioned data points, students are placed in:
Grade 8 Math
Algebra I
Geometry: Only students that successfully completed the Algebra XL course in 7th grade will be eligible for Geometry in 8th Grade.
Eighth grade students that meet the requirements for acceleration participate in the Algebra I class, which is a high school level course. Algebra I aligns to the Algebra I standards and is the same course that is offered at Shore Regional High School. The Algebra I students will participate in the state assessment for Algebra I at the end of eighth grade. All other 8th grade students will participate in the Grade 8 NJSLA in the Spring.
The curriculum for these courses can be found HERE.
Note: Pre-algebra placement in 7th grade is not required for a student to participate in Algebra I, however student must meet the criteria for placement.
The curriculum for the Geometry course will be developed during the summer 2024. This curriculum will be posted once it is board approved.
