September always seems to fly by... at first, we're just getting to know each other and by the end of the month, it feels like we've been working together for ages. It's been a true pleasure working with your children last month! Their shining personalities make coming to Maple Place a joy for me each day!
In September, students started adjusting to the policies and procedures of the classroom. One skill I try to help teach students is time management and prioritizing - critical executive functioning skills. I ask them to pace themselves throughout the week to make sure they're making the most of their time in class and minimizing the work they need to complete at home. It's difficult to find a balance, but most students are doing great so far!
We launched our Personal Narrative Unit, which focuses on developing Narrative writing skills such as building dialogue and inner thinking to reveal a character, using sensory details to describe the setting and characters' actions, and using grammar techniques such as coordinate adjectives, prepositional phrases, and simple sentences to enhance our story and pull the reader in. At the end of September, students wrapped up their Bend 1 Narratives. Please take the time to check out some of the fabulous Bend 1 essays submitted below. In October, we will write two additional narratives before beginning Unit 2: Investigating Characterization.
One of my favorite parts of compiling this newsletter is sharing student work! In September, we took some time to write about ourselves by describing "The Best Part of Me." While this is sometimes seen as a juvenile or elementary activity, I feel that middle school students can raise their self-esteem by celebrating their talents while also practicing (or showing off) their figurative language skills. I was incredibly impressed by their work! I hope you enjoy reading these and trying to guess who wrote each one!

In this assignment, students were asked to write a true, personal story about a time in their lives when they learned or realized something for the first time. They were asked to incorporate techniques to develop their characters, bring their setting to life, use simple sentences to create a dramatic effect, and add an ellipsis (...) for emphasis. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
This month, I'm excited to share a peek inside our learning space! Thanks to the PTO, our classroom now has a magnetic poetry set, and students have been busy crafting creative poems that show their imagination and teamwork. We’ve also been enjoying a brain break game called “Elevens,” where students collaborate to use their fingers to add up to eleven. Brain breaks give students a short pause to recharge, helping them return to learning with better focus and energy. They also reduce stress and encourage collaboration, making the classroom a more engaging and productive environment.
It’s been a fun way to learn, laugh, and work together!

New Jersey school districts, charter schools, and renaissance school projects are required by statute (N.J.S.A. 18A: 7C-6.6) to annually notify parents or guardians of any statewide student assessment or commercially developed standardized assessment that will be administered over the course of the school year.
Our Curriculum & Instruction Department has worked diligently to put together Oceanport School District’s 2025-2026 Assessment Calendar. Included in the calendar are our anticipated testing dates as well as links to parent resources.
