First Words Preschool Speech and Language Program of Ottawa and Renfrew County
The first years of life are very important for learning speech and language. From the time children are born, they start communicating. Very early in their lives, they learn to understand what you are saying and to make sounds of their own. Eventually, these sounds and babbling will turn into words. These are the initial milestones in the development of speech and language skills. Communication skills are critical to a child’s future success in school and in life.
The FirstWords Communication Checkup is a valuable online tool to:
Screen your child’s communication and global development
Get instant results based on how you answer the questionnaire.
Get recommended next steps to support your child’s development.
Complete your referral online to send your child’s results to the recommended service for their development.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that occurs in all racial, ethnic, socio-economic and gender identity groups and affects the way people interact and communicate with those around them. Each autistic individual has their own strengths, needs and gifts.
The early signs of autism are easy to miss. Autism can be diagnosed by 18-24 months, but it’s not usually diagnosed until 4-5 years. The early signs of autism can have a cascading effect on brain development and lead to significant social, language, and cognitive deficits, as well as challenging behaviors, if they’re not caught early. By catching autism early, you can access intervention earlier and guide your child’s success. Early intervention plays a crucial role in supporting children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
