Jeff Lawson
I have been teaching Drama at Canterbury for 21(?!) years. My first grad show was 17 years ago. This one is my biggest one yet, in every sense possible. With a group of 38, I needed something with many, many parts. Even with so many characters, I had to split the two biggest parts (at intermission, Will and Viola will change to different performers) and I have actors in roles with barely any lines who would be capable of speaking much, much more. Everyone has been a good sport - and I SO appreciate that. Part of the beauty of a grad show is that everyone that wants to be on stage is, but all of them also have offstage roles in every area of production.
The set, costumes, props, posters……everything for this play is designed, created or obtained by the Grade 12 Drama cohort.
I truly could not have directed this particular show without the support of many people. Matt Minter, Mike Dearing, Amy and Linda Loder, Jason Sinkus, and Martina Dobson, I am eternally grateful for your contributions. Parents/guardians, for supporting these young people in every way you do, thank you…and thank you for letting me keep your teens at school so often - and in April, so late.
On my second grad show program, and every one since, I thanked Allison. I simply could not do this job without your support. You and Elliott and Gwen deserve the biggest standing ovations of all for putting up with my absenteeism at home whenever Canterbury Drama requires me.
To you, our audience, thank you so much for supporting the work we do here. It is never taken for granted. The more we worked on this script, the more I realized that, though the romantic love story is front and centre, this play is also a profound love letter to Art and its role in bringing vitality to the human experience. What could be more fitting for Canterbury? Enjoy the show!
