kindergarten 101

Welcome to COnvent Glen!

Welcome to The Small School with the BIg Heart! Here is an introduction to Kindergarten at our school.

Arriving at school

Please note, that due to Covid protocols, parents are not permitted onto the school yards.

If your child takes the school bus, there will be a teacher at the bus each morning to greet them and help them to the kindergarten yard.

If you are dropping your child off, please park in the designated spots and walk your child to the gate at the sidewalk. Please note: you may not park in the bus lane to drop your child off.

School Schedule

8:15-8:30 - Arrival / Morning Recess. Students are supervised on the school yard starting at 8:15.

8:30-10:30 - Learning Block

10:30 - 11:20 - 1st Nutrition Break / Recess

11:20-1:20 - Learning Block

1:20 - 2:00 - 2nd Nutrition Break / Recess

2:00-3:00 - Learning Block

Tips for Nutrition Breaks

  • Pack your child's lunch in containers that they can open themselves. Labeling containers as with 1 and 2 can help your child navigate two lunch breaks.

  • Let your child help pack their lunch so that they know what is in their lunch box. You can talk about which snacks they might choose at each break.

  • Pack a water bottle!

Things to pack for school

REMEMBER TO LABEL EVERYTHING!!!!!

  • A backpack that easily fits their lunch box and a water bottle, and a pair of shoes

  • A pair of indoor shoes that can be left at school (shoes with laces are discouraged unless your child is able to tie their laces independently)

  • A complete change of clothing (make sure all pieces are labeled) including socks and underwear. (Putting this in a ziplock bag is helpful, as we can use the ziplock bag to send home soiled clothing if necessary)

Outdoor learning

A large portion of the kindergarten program is comprised of outdoor learning. The kindergarten class spends a lot of time outside in all types of weather. Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather.

Somethings to consider:

  • Rain boots for wet weather

  • Rain gear (like a Muddy Buddy, or a rain suit https://www.westcoastkids.ca/muddy-buddy#)

  • Extra warm clothing for winter play (we will be outside unless the temperature is below -25'C). Waterproof mittens are a must! (make sure to label these!)
