THE LIBRARY

What is a School library?

A school library is a library within a school where students and staff have access to a variety of resources. A school library has many books that are fun to read and every library collection has information that can improve students’ understanding of the subjects they learn at school, and increase their knowledge of the world.

It is a place where all students feel welcome and encouraged to grow and learn. School libraries provide more than just books. School libraries provide a safe haven for all students to think, create, share, and grow. School libraries can be the hub of learning and the favorite spot for many students.

What is the difference between Fiction and Non-fiction Books?

A fiction book is when the writer uses their imagination to create a kind of literature called fiction. They invent characters, put them in a setting, and give them feelings, words, and adventures.

A non-fiction book is one that tells you facts and information about the world around you. It can cover almost any topic, from wild animals to Vikings. If it's about something that really happened or something that really exists, it is non-fiction.

What are Call Numbers?

Libraries use classification systems to organize the books on the shelves. A classification system uses letters and/or numbers (call numbers) to arrange the books so that books on the same topic are together.

Fiction books are shelved in alphabetical order by the author's last name.

Nonfiction books are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal System. This is an organization system for books that assigns each book a number depending on the subject.
