This course is a scientific study of mental processes and behavior. The following psychology topics are explored: methodology, physiology, sensation, perception, states of consciousness, learning, memory, intelligence, thought, language, development, motivation, emotion, sexuality, health, stress, personality, abnormal disorders, and therapies. My goal is to help you see how psychology can help you in your everyday lives.
This course meets the lower division major requirements for Psychology (transferable to UCs and CSUs).

This course is a study of the biology of behavior, covering cells and what they do, and the structure, function, and development of the nervous and hormone systems. It also covers movement and movement disorders, learning and plasticity, the neurological basis of motivated and emotional behavior, along with a series of specific behavioral categories, such as sleep, dreaming, sexual behavior and mental illness. It explores the biological basis of higher cerebral functions that tend to distinguish us as humans from other animal species, such as learning, memory, intelligence, thought and language. In short – the first half of the semester is the basics of psychobiology, while in the second half we’ll use that information to help us learn more about different behaviors and disorders.

This course addresses the principles and techniques which are involved in experimental research concerning behavior and emphasizes designing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting research in the behavioral sciences. Students will learn how to evaluate and conduct experimental research. Before learning how to design and execute your own experiment, you will learn a variety of concepts and issues related to experimental strategies and designs. The concepts in the text will carry over into the lab portion of the class, where students will become experts in online research tools, prepare portions of a research paper in APA format, conduct experiments, use JASP to analyze data, ultimately writing up a complete research report. (54 hours lecture; 54 hours lab)
