Wilder Dice

Welcome to Wilder Dice! Wilder Dice will be Oberlin's first live table top role-playing performance experience! Hosted in Wilder Main, Wilder Dice will present a devised, improvised performance that will mix the magic of fantasy game play with the excitement of live performance. We are looking for bold artists who want to write, devise and perform as a part of our collective theatrical troupe.

Timeline:

Auditions:

February 6th, 4:00pm-6:00pm in Warner Studio 3

February 7th, 2:00pm-6:00pm in Warner Studio 3

Rehearsals:

Week of Febuary 16th to Week of April 19th

Performances:

April 24th at 7:30pm

April 25th at 2:00pm and 7:30pm

April 26th at 2:00pm

Audition Info:

In-person auditions will be held in hour long time slots for February 6th and 7th in Warner studio 3. Up to 10 auditionees can sign up for a time slot.

No preparation is required before your audition, just bring your wonderful self! Auditionees will be participating in improv and devising activities during the audition.

For virtual auditions, you will record a video of yourself performing a 1-2 minute monologue based on one of the prompts on this magical prompts wheel below! You may write or improvise your monologue, as both skills will be essential to our performance. If you don’t like the first prompt given to you, then you can spin again, BUT WE WILL KNOW BECAUSE WE ARE PSYCHIC. If the wheel doesn’t work for any reason, here are the prompts below.

The Magical Prompts Wheel

Some questions you might have:

'So are you just going to have a group of people sit at a table and play D&D?'

No! We will have group of people playing D&D ON THIER FEET! Wilder Dice will function much like an improv show would, in which performers are creating dialogue and blocking on the spot. That is, until we begin combat scenes, in which actors will then move to tables and enlarged minifigures will be presented on stage. However the major focus of our shows will be on player chemistry and roleplay.

'Ok, so the entire show is basically improvised?'

Also not entirely true! Much like how the average TTRPG game will have a 'session zero' in order for players to prepare characters, backstories, and the overall world that they will walk into when they begin their journey, Wilder Dice will be a deeply informed, devised and workshopped improv performance. Additionally, actors will have rehearsed pieces of writing that will be incorporated into the performance, much like how we prepare for speeches and songs in real life.

'What will rehearsals be like?'

Rehearsal will include improv exercises, character work and creation, devising overall plot objectives and messaging, rehearsing personal written pieces, and of course, playing D&D!

'How are casts and performances going to work?'

The Wilder Dice, like every Omta/Osta show, will have four performances. That's a lot of D&D! How are we going to do it!? Well you see, our cast will be between 8 to12 actors, and we will be preparing to tell two different stories. Our cast will then be split into two different parties, who will then get to experience each story on a different night.

'So who's the game master?' (Also known as GM/DM)

Hello! My name is Conrad Branch! I am a third year cinema major, and I've performed in several shows at Oberlin, and had my play Deficiency be performed last year. I've enjoyed DM'ing for quite a while now, and digest an unhealthy amount of TTRPG content. I will be the director and DM for Wilder Dice! But my goal isn't to be some grand amazing storyteller, it's to be the facilitator of an ensemble who will be the true storytellers of the show, as the scenes that the actors create together will be the most important aspect of the show. My job is to keep the show moving and to possibly kill everyone's characters.
