2023 Experience

In 2023, Prof. McGuire led sixteen students from the College and Conservatory through London’s musical history. The students came from all over the United States and China, and spent fifteen days listening to music in a variety of London’s venues. The group attended lecture/discussions in the morning, and either saw a concert or did a site visit during the rest of the day. Highlights of the trip included a free-ranging discussion with Donna Vinter about the fantastic play Mandela, seeing the Royal Opera House's production of Mozart's Magic Flute, and hearing Evensong at Westminster Abbey.

Performances attended:

• A sitar concert and a Mozart recital at the Wigmore hall

• A pantomime at the Park Theatre Royal

• A production of Henry V by the Wanamaker Theatre by Shakespeare's Globe

• A performance of Mozart's The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera House

• Evensong at Westminster Abbey

• A concert performance of Janaczek's Katya Kabanova by the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Hall

• A tour of Rock & Roll history in Central London

• A live jazz accompaniment of a silent film

• A musical at the Young Vic Theatre

• A choral concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields

• A candlight concert of Chopin's piano music in an early 20th-century house

• A double-decker bus tour of London with high tea
