The Oberlin Musical Theatre Association is excited to bring Little Shop of Horrors to the Oberlin stage this Fall!
Performances from November 20th-22nd, 2026!
Here's a synopsis:
The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II" - after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II's out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!
A deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop Of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 years.

This year, OMTA/OSTA has begun a long-term partnership with the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) to address racial biases and create more equitable spaces within Oberlin's student theater. Little Shop is one step of many recent efforts to tell more diverse stories with BIPOC actors, playwrights, and directors.
Because Oberlin is such a leftist school, implicit bias often falls through the cracks. Doing the work requires an intentional, ongoing effort; one which is both necessary and incredibly worthwhile to pursue.
The MRC and the OMTA/OSTA DEIJ board are working to create genuine change, with efforts such as outreach events, increasing feedback channels, and hosting internal workshops on topics such as recognizing the pillars of white supremacy and creating uplifting rehearsal spaces where students feel secure and empowered to advocate for themselves. These workshops will extend to casting teams for both Fall shows, cast & crew, and the OMTA/OSTA board as a whole.
We share this with you, our potential auditionee, not as a mark of virtue signaling as many of these types of statements often are, but to inform you of the larger advocacy work that encompases this production, and of which both directors are a part of. We want to honor the historical diversity of Little Shop not only for this production, but as an inclusion into the OMTA/OSTA community.
Please consider joining the OMTA/OSTA board, either at our upcoming elections or join as a member-at-large at any time! More information can be found on our Instagram in the coming weeks, or join the organization's Discord here for more updates!
We firmly believe that student theater belongs to every Oberlin student. Know that you will be respected, secure, and advocated for in this space. If you want to be here, then we want you here too. Thank you.

Characters
Note: BIPOC actors are encouraged to apply for any role they would like, not just characters with a stated ethnicity! We also welcome all to apply for a role within or outside of their gender identity. If called back, you are welcome to change the octave of your part to support your vocal range, but we cannot change the key of any song due to the nature of our licensing agreement.
SEYMOUR - Mid-twenties and perhaps balding a little. Our insecure, naive, put-upon, florist's clerk. Above all, he's a sweet and well-meaning little man. Despite his lack of social skills, he is not a stereotypically silly, prat-falling nerd.
Range: A2 - G4
AUDREY - Seymour's coworker, the bleached-blond, Billie-Dawn-like, secret love of his life. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor.
Range: G#3 - D5
MR. MUSHNIK - Their boss. A failure of an East Side florist. A jaded man trying to keep his failing business afloat, who seldom smiles but often sweats. We will be casting a Jewish actor for this role.
Range: G2 - F4
ORIN - Audrey's abusive boyfriend. A tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic tendencies. Think of an egotistical pretty-boy-all got up like a greaser but thinking like an insurance salesman and talking like a radio announcer.
Range: G2 - G4
THE PLANT (AUDREY II) - An anthropomorphic, flytrap-like plant that hungers for blood. A street-smart, funky, conniving villain with a R&B voice that oozes charisma and confidence. Typically portrayed with a series of puppets, the Plant will be an onstage human actor for this production. The actor in this role should own the stage with expressive movement and scene-stealing villainous swagger. Will likely involve heavy drag-inspired makeup.
Range: G2 - G4
CRYSTAL, RONNETTE, and CHIFFON - Three female street urchins who are participants in the action and a Greek Chorus outside it. They're young, hip, smart, and the only people in the whole cast who really know what's going on. In their "Greek Chorus" capacity, they occasionally sing to the audience directly. And when they do, it's often with a secret smile that says: "we know something you don't know." We will be casting Black actors for these roles.
Range: Ab3 - F5
"EVERYONE ELSE" - A single actor playing the majority of the side characters in the play, including First Customer, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, & Skip Snip. Sharp, witty, and versatile.
Range: E2 - E3
A note on acting from the director:
Despite this show's satirical horror comedy nature, we are aiming for an acting style that comes from a grounded and honest foundation. I think author and lyricist of of the show Howard Ashman says it best in this note included in the script:
"Little Shop of Horrors satirizes many things: science fiction, ‘B’ movies, musical comedy itself, and even the Faust legend. There will, therefore, be a temptation to play it for camp and low-comedy. This is a great and potentially fatal mistake. The script keeps its tongue firmly in cheek, so the actors should not. Instead, they should play with simplicity, honesty, and sweetness, even when events are at their most outlandish. The show’s individual “style” will evolve naturally from the words themselves and an approach to acting and singing them that is almost child-like in its sincerity and intensity. By way of example, Audrey poses like Fay Wray from time to time. But she does this because she’s in genuine fear and happens to see the world as her private ‘B’ movie—not because she’s “commenting” to the audience on the silliness of her situation. I can vouch for the fact that when Little Shop is at its most honest, it is also at its funniest and most enjoyable."
Also consider auditioning for OSTA's The Making of Mr. Lincoln, a new play written and directed by Wesley Brubaker!
Auditions will be held August 29th and 30th.
Callbacks will be held September 2nd.
Performances are November 13-15.
