We are a bright and enthusiastic group of Obies who investigate the processes by which aquatic contaminants are chemically transformed (fate) and move throughout the environment (transport). Fluorinated contaminants are particularly interesting to us, due to their high persistence and widespread use in consumer goods, including pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, we tend to focus on photochemical transformations, which we simulate in the laboratory with photoreactor systems. We monitor the loss of contaminants with high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and characterize the resulting transformation products using mass spectrometry.
