Research in the Bowers lab focuses on the fate and transport of contaminants in aqueous systems. By simulating environmental conditions in the laboratory and utilizing analytical techniques to characterize contaminants and their transformation products, we can understand the impacts of contaminants on the environment, improve remediation strategies, and inform product formulations to be more sustainable.
With regard to fate, we focus on photochemical transformations of contaminants, as these occur naturally in surface water and are often leveraged as a water treatment tactic in built systems. As for transport processes, we primarily focus on sorption, which is becoming a more widely-adopted remediation strategy in water treatment trains.Â
