Oaks Primary Academy Newsletter

22nd March 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

In our penultimate week of Module 4 and last Friday of term, we have so much to celebrate.

Spring seems to have arrived and we have a great deal next week to mark its arrival: our Easter Church service on Wednesday 27th from 10am at St Martin's Church is always a joyous occasion and a fantastic way to prepare for the Easter break.

We have already begun our farewells for Esther Barford (St Martin's Church School Liaison Officer) who has worked in her role for over 13 years. Esther is always present for our school celebrations at St Martin's Church and has been a supportive and welcoming member of our school community for a very long time now. Esther is looking forward to spending more time with her family having made the decision to step back from the role and we thank her for her kindness, support and generosity over the years. She will be greatly missed but always welcome at Oaks.

A concern of mine is that we are seeing more and more packed lunches being sent into school which are exceptionally high in sugar.

I have not placed strict guidance on packed lunches thus far, but will be reviewing this over the Easter break. On average, a child of primary school age should have no more than 22 grams of sugar per day.

I have seen packed lunches with cookies, flapjacks, chocolate items and crisps. The expectation is that packed lunches have a main item (sandwiches), fruit, a source of calcium such as yoghurt and small offering of a sweet treat in moderation if you see fit.

A point of reference should be that a can of coca-cola contains 39 grams of sugar, this already exceeds the daily limit for children. If children are consuming their daily allowance of sugar in one go then their energy spikes and they ultimately crash which is detrimental to mood and concentration.

I have known children to come onto the school grounds consuming sweets and fizzy drinks, this not only impacts their ability to concentrate but also sits on their soft infant teeth and decays them through the day. This will directly lead to dental complications and severe pain.

I care greatly about every child and would not want them to experience such discomfort so will raise this with parents as a duty of care.

Thank you to those of you who ensure that your children are consuming a balanced and varied diet, the benefits are profound and your children will continue to function at their very best throughout the day.

Please be reminded that next Friday is Good Friday and therefore a bank holiday.

Our final day of term is next Thursday 28th March with our first day of next term being 15th April.

I wish you all a lovely, safe and restful break and can't wait to enter Module 5 full of energy and hopefully we will be blessed with drier and warmer weather when we return.
