Blackbirds Skype Farmer Will

Case Study with LEAF

We worked with LEAF Education and Farmer Will to write about how we learn a lot from our video calls with Will.

How have tractors changed over time?

July 15th 2019

We tried to spot the difference between two of Will's tractors.

We found out that Will is about as tall as the rear wheel of the newest and biggest tractor!

Before we Skyped Will, we put images of tractors in order from oldest to newest. Also we had to explain how they had changed.

March 2019 Skype

During this Skype call, farmer Will brought us to his friend Emily's farm. They have been friends for a very long time. Emily's sheep are having lambs now so we had so many questions about the lambs that are being born.

Read our questions section to find out what we asked.

We found out that she has 22 rams and 1000 ewes. Here sheep will have about 1500 lambs. Some will be twins and even triplets! If a ewe has triplets, the farmer has to bottle feed one as the sheep won't have enough milk for three lambs. When a lamb is born they are yellowy and wet. After a few hours, they are white and fluffy. The sheep and lambs get fresh water from Emily every day and hay. Farmer Emily also gives them brown food that makes them healthy. When they are out in the fields they eat the fresh grass. When lambs turn 1 they are an adult and then they can have baby sheep. The farmers have to be watchful in case anything tries to hurt their animals.

We were so joyful and happy when we saw the lambs because some of us have never seen them before. It was the best day ever in the whole entire universe!

January 2019 Skype

Our inquiry question is How do we keep Safe? When we Skyped Farmer Will, we had lots of questions for him about how he keeps himself, his animals, his farm and his family safe.

Farmer Will told us that when his children ride the horse Storm, they have to wear a crash helmet.. When they are on the farm they wear yellow high vis jackets so that people can see them.

Farmer Will always has to lock the gates to make sure that the animals don't get out and they are kept safe.

Farmer Will has a very very old tractor. He has a new one too and you have to be sitting on the seat to make it work. It's very loud.

If there is a really big storm Farmer Will brings the animals in to a safe place. When it's nice and sunny they can be outside.

November 2018

We are so excited in Year 2 - Blackbird Class - to be back in touch with Farmer Will, who we connected with over Skype last year. Farmer Will is going to bring his farm into our classroom through Skype and we can't wait to learn about the exciting things happening on his farm at this time of year.

Keep up to date here where Blackbirds will take turns writing up their Skype sessions with Farmer Will.

Click on the reports tab above or here to read about what we write after each Skype call.

Our first call with Farmer Will

Last Friday we Skyped a farmer. Every day farmer Will's chickens lay thousands of eggs. Will has 4000 chickens.

We also saw black and white cows. Will fed a calf a bottle in his barn and we got to watch. Farmer Will has one white horse called Storm. Farmer Will has red tractors . On the farm, there are gates for the cows. We showed farmer Will our pictures of him and he liked our pictures of him . He showed us all the animals on his farm. Farmer will has 6031 animals. Before we called him we wrote questions that we had to ask him to find out more about his farm.

We really loved chatting to him on Skype because we haven't met a farmer before.
