At school children may feel isolated or left out because initially they cannot access Spanish language and may have problems mixing, especially at break times. I have two roles, the first is to make the students feel comfortable in their Spanish learning. I try to show them that Spanish is not a mystery, that Spanish is not as difficult as they may think, and that learning can be fun and have rapid progress.

Second is to teach them the technical side of the language as efficiently as possible, grammar, vocabulary, alphabet, numbers, verbs, common phrases etc. This should lead into the ability to control the four communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

As parents, you can help this process by including Spanish in your every day lives, a language is not something to be hidden away and only studied once a week. To master a language, it has to be a part of your life.

To help your child improve their Spanish, try to use Spanish around the home. For example:

• Watch TV in Spanish. Use subtitles in your first language so that you can all enjoy the program.

• Encourage them to read in Spanish. This must be at a level that they are comfortable with so that they can enjoy what they read.

• Configure things like email accounts, mobile phone settings, TV settings into Spanish.

• Ask them to teach you a Spanish word a day and let them test you.

• Make yourself familiar with this site and encourage your child to use it.

• If you write a shopping list, get your child to translate it to Spanish.

• When moving around the island, in restraunts, supermarkets and shops, let your child translate for you.

Los niños pueden sentirse aislados o excluidos porque inicialmente no pueden acceder al idioma español y pueden tener problemas para mezclarse, especialmente en los recreos. Tengo dos papeles, el primero es para asegurarse de que los estudiantes se sientan cómodos en su aprendizaje del español. Trato de mostrarles que el español no es un misterio, que el español no es tan difícil como pueden pensar y que el aprendizaje puede progresar rápidamente.

En segundo lugar, enseñarles la parte técnica del idioma de la manera más eficiente posible, la gramática, el vocabulario, el alfabeto, los números, los verbos, las frases comunes, etc. Esto debería terminar a la capacidad de dominar las cuatro habilidades de comunicación: leer, escribir, escuchar y hablar.

Como padres, pueden ayudar en este proceso al incluir el español en su vida cotidiana, un idioma no es algo que se deba ocultar y que solo se estudie una vez a la semana. Para dominar un idioma, tiene que ser parte de tu vida.

Para ayudar a su hijo a mejorar su español, intenta de usar el español en el hogar. Por ejemplo:

• Ver televisión en español. Utilice subtítulos en su primer idioma para que todos puedan disfrutar del programa.

• Anímelos a leer en español. Esto debe estar en un nivel con el que se sientan cómodos para que puedan disfrutar de lo que leen.

• Configure cosas como cuentas de correo electrónico, configuraciones de teléfonos móviles, configuraciones de TV en español.

• Pídeles que te enseñen una palabra en español al día y permíteles que te prueben.

• Familiarícese con este sitio y anime a su hijo a usarlo.

• Si escribe una lista de compras, pídale a su hijo que la traduzca al español.

• Cuando se desplace por la isla, en restaurantes, supermercados y tiendas, permita que su hijo le traduzca.
