Data Collection

In March 2017, January of 2020, and February 2023, Kindergarten teachers at OUSD public schools generously dedicated their time to fill out the EDI questionnaire for each of their Kindergarten students. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete for each child and includes questions on physical health & well-being, social competence, emotional maturity, language & cognitive development, and communication skills & general knowledge. We first collected EDI data in March 2017 with the participation of 53 schools and 156 teachers. In total, teachers filled out questionnaires for 2,821 students, which represented 88% of OUSD Kindergarteners in 2016-17. Our second round of EDI data collection was in January 2020 with the participation of 52 schools and 155 teachers. We collected questionnaires for 2,886 students, which represented 93% of Kindergarteners in 2019-20. In our third round in 2023, 161 teachers completed survey on 2,363 children across 50 schools for a 94% completion rate.

UCLA’s Center for Healthy Children, Families, and Communities led the data collection process and initial analysis of the EDI data and continues to support OUSD in using the EDI to drive practice and policy changes across the district.

Reporting EDI Data

As a population-level measure, the EDI shows us where in Oakland children are most developmentally on track and where there is need for additional support. Because the focus of the EDI is to work together as a community to prepare ALL children in Oakland for school, the EDI results are not reported on individual children or teachers, nor are the data used to evaluate individual children or teacher performance. Results by neighborhood help us understand the geographic patterns and societal conditions that are driving children’s developmental outcomes across Oakland
