1. What is the average of 1/3 and 1/6?
a. 1/4
b. 1/9
c. 2/9
d. 2/3
The average is between the two numbers.
Between 1/3 and 1/6 is numbers like 1/4 and 1/5.
So 1/9 is out. 2/3 is the same 4/6 which is bigger than 1/3, so d. is out.
So the answers can only be a or c. Your odds are 50-50 of getting it right.
2. If Ron scored 74 points in three basketball games, then his average score is calculated:
a. 74/3
b. 3/74
c. 74 x 4
d. 74 – 4
Let's say you scored 20 points a game, then in three games you'd have scored 60. So to get 74, you'd need to have scored a few more...let's say 25.
Figuring out the possible solutions yields:
a. 24.67 b. 0.405 c. 296 d. 70
So the answer is a.
3. What is the slope of the line in the xy-plane that passes through the points (-5/2, 1) and (-1/2, 4) ?
a. -1
b. -2/3
c. 1
d. 3/2
If you do a quick graph, you'll see that the line that goes through those points is going up (from left to right). This means the slope is positive. So the answer can only be c or d.
If you know that slope is RISE over RUN, then to get from the left point to the right, do you go up 1 and over 1 (c) or up 3 and over 2 (d)?
The answer is d.
4. A coffee shop is running a promotion where a number of free coffee samples are given away each day. The equation above can be used to model the number of free coffee samples, y, that remain to be given away x days after the promotion began. What does it mean that (11, 0) is a solution to the equation: 110x + y = 1,210 ?
a.. During the promotion, 11 samples are given away each day.
b. It takes 11 days during the promotion to see 1,210 customers.
c. It takes 11 days during the promotion until none of the samples are remaining.
d. There are 11 samples available at the start of the promotion.
The solution (11, 0) represents a point of the form (x, y). So, in this case, x = 11 and y = 0. From the problem, it says that x is days and y is the number of samples. So look for an answer that mentions 11 days and 0 samples. Therefore, the answer is c.
5. Which ordered pair (x, y) satisfies the system of equations shown below?
2x - y = 6, x + 2y = -2
a. (–6, 2)
b. (–2, 2)
c. (2, –2)
d. (4, 2)
You can solve this using substitution, elimination, graphing, Cramer's Rule, Matrices, etc.....
...Or just plug in each value and see what works.
a. 2(-6) - 2 does not equal 6
b. 2(-2) - 2 does not equal 6
c. 2(2) - -2 DOES equal 6 and 2 + 2(-2) DOES equal -2
d. 2(4) - 2 DOES equal 6 but 4 + 2(2) does NOT equal 8
6. Which of the following is a solution to the equation 2x² + 4x = 3 + 3x² ?
a. –1
b. 0
c. 3
d. 6
Same as #5, just plug in each value for x.
a. 2(-1)² + 4(-1) = 3 + 3(-1)² gives -2 = 6 ....nope
b. 2(0)² + 4(0) = 3 + 3(0)² gives 0 = 3 ....nope
c. 2(3)² + 4(3) = 3 + 3(3)² gives 30 = 30 ....yep
d. 2(6)² + 4(6) = 3 + 3(6)² gives 96 = 111 ....nope
7. A line is graphed in the xy-plane. If the line has a positive slope and a negative y-intercept, which of the following points cannot lie on the line?
a. (–3, –3)
b (–3, 3)
c. (3, –3)
d. (3, 3)
You'll want to draw this one.
The y-intercept is negative, so the graph is moving from Quadrant III to Quadrant IV (at x = 0).
It has a positive slope so it's going upwards (left to right). So it must start in Quadrant III and eventually end up in Quadrant I.
Therefore, it will NEVER be in Quadrant II. (-3, 3) is in Quadrant II, so the answer is b.
8. If the equation y = (x – 6)(x + 12) is graphed in the xy-plane, what is the x-coordinate of the parabola’s vertex?
a. –6
b. –3
c. 3
d. 6
A little math knowledge helps here. In this factored form, you can easily the x-intercepts (or zeros of the function). They are 6 and -12. The vertex will be halfway between these two points. So the answer is b.
Or you could plug various x values into the equation and get some points to plot. The vertex will be the low point of the parabola. (If you didn't know ahead of time that it's a low point, the graph would help you out)
9. According to the Department of Agriculture, consuming 100 grams of banana provides 0.15 milligram of zinc. Which of the following is closest to the number of milligrams of zinc provided by 140 grams of banana?
a. 0.15
b. 0.21
c. 0.25
d. 0.93
If 100 grams of bananas gives you 0.15 grams of zinc, then 200 grams of bananas would give you twice as much or 0.30 grams of zinc. The given number of 140 grams of bananas is a little less than halfway between 100 and 200, so the answer should be a little less than halfway between 0.15 and 0.3. Halfway between these is 0.225, so a little less would be 0.21 or b.
10. Juliene practiced her dance routine for twice as many minutes on Monday as she did on Tuesday. She practiced her routine those days for a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes. For how many minutes did Juliene practice her dance routine on Monday?
Visualize Juliene's Google calendar. She has a certain amount of time blocked off for dancing on Tuesday.
She danced twice as long on Monday, so she would have two of those time slots blocked off.
So looking at the two days, there would be THREE time slots blocked off for dancing.
2 hours and 15 minutes = 60 + 60 +15 = 135 minutes total.
So how long is 1 time slot? 3 slots = 135 minutes, so divide by 3 --> 135 / 3 = 45 minutes.
So the answer is 45 minutes???
No. This is why reading the problem is important. The are asking about how long she danced on Monday.
On Monday, she danced for TWO time slots, which means that she danced for 45 minutes and then another 45 minutes, or a total of 90 minutes.
