The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines PURPOSE as "something set up as an object or end to be attained : INTENTION".
When we look at all aspects of our life, we should ask ourselves, "what end results do I want?"
How can we work at something, if we don't know what we are trying to accomplish?
Everybody thinks about what they want to do with their lives.
Sometimes your purpose can be something simple.
Sometimes it can be fairly complex and involve various aspects of our lives.
“When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind.” - Seneca
It gives you a place to start.
It helps you decide on what things are important and what things are not.
It gives meaning to what you do.
It gives you motivation.
It helps you figure out your goals.
It should come from WITHIN
Not something you're EXPECTED to do
Or just something that OTHERS are doing
You should LOVE doing it
...And It should INSPIRE you
...And be MEANINGFUL to you
Choosing a career that you LOVE, INSPIRES you, and is MEANINGFUL to you is important.
This is summed up by a Venn diagram created by Spanish author, Andres Zuzunaga .
How much consideration have you put into your plans for your future? Will you be doing something that falls in the middle of the purpose diagram?
In the following exercises, you will consider your future career plans and create a purpose statement that you can use to guide you.
This idea of purpose is similar to the Japanese concept of Ikigai.
Your Ikigai is your reason for being. The reason you get up every morning.
Now, you may be thinking, "I'm not driven by making money", or "I'm not interested in helping out humanity." It's not necessary to find a purpose that's exactly in the middle. Just find something that you aren't going to regret doing for a big chunk of your life.
Ask yourself what you LOVE, what you’re GOOD AT, what the WORLD NEEDS, and what you can get PAID FOR. Use these to come up with a purpose statement related to your career.
