Grit is the quality of showing perseverance towards obtaining one's goals.
It's sticking with something even when it gets tough.
It's not giving up on a dream just because obstacles get in your way.
It's finding inner strength to accomplish a formidable task.
It's grit.
As it was described in Time magazine in 1940:
"The Finns have something they call sisu. It is a compound of bravado and bravery, of ferocity and tenacity, of the ability to keep fighting after most people would have quit, and to fight with the will to win. The Finns translate sisu as "the Finnish spirit" but it is a much more gutful word than that."
We all face times where we think things will not work out like we want.
We might never reach our dreams.
...And, yes, sometimes we fall short of the goal we want.
But you have to keep trying. Never give up.
Watch this Olympic race. Is there only one winner?
Angela Duckworth is a professor of Psychology who is one of the leading researchers of grit.
This video sums up her book "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance".
In England, on Christmas day, in 1937, a heavy fog fell over a football game (soccer to some) between teams from Chelsea and Charlton.
The Charlton goal keeper, Sam Bartram, couldn’t see his teammates and assumed they were at the other end of the pitch.
But because he had GRIT, he continued to keep goal, even though he couldn't see.
Eventually, he saw someone coming his way. It was a policeman, who asked him why he was still on the field. The game had been called 15 minutes earlier and everyone had left.
If you're doing something for the wrong reason,
Or you're past the point when you should have stopped,
Or things stop being fun or become unhealthy.
This is a very simplistic poster. You'd see it in an elementary school. But the point is still the same.
And if you showed grit as a kid, it's likely that it's a part of you.
And it will follow you your whole life.
...As long as you never give up.
👹 Now we'd like you to reflect on GRIT.
