A prototype for a table dealing with Connection Paradox in 2124.
Concepts
What comes to your mind when we talk about connections? To the four of us in our group agreed on how a dinner table, no matter with family or friends, would successfully represent the magical moment where we can feel the connections between each other. However, the magical moment fades away once someone picks up their phone and starts texting. But what if the table would collapse once someone gets distracted and picks up their phone? In our opinion, it would be a great reason for people to be off their phones for a while. Our table have this LED circle that requires people to put their phones in before they start eating. If anyone take away their phone during the dinning process, the table collapse and no one would be able to eat. Sometimes people would hesitate whether to tell their family members or friends to stay off their phones or not. We are expecting that with this table, people can be encouraged to express their feelings more and value these moments they have with people they care.
Successes and Failures
The success of this project would be that it perfectly illustrate the specific scene where a lot of people encounter or least have a clear taste of the Connection Paradox, the dinner table where people you're eating with are on their phones. The prototype itself successfully shows the kind of dramatic effect I was looking for. As someone picks up their phone and takes it away from the table, the round table collapse. In our original idea, the collapse of the table represents the collapse of effective interaction between people sitting at the same dining table. What's more, the phone being taken away represents people's attention shifting away from the table. We learnt earlier in Crawford's article, 'The Art of Interaction Design' that a high-quality interaction has to have its three component, input, process and output to be all of high quality. The table here tries to guarantee the quality of inputs and outputs at a dinner table.
And the failure would be that this table does it job ,which is bringing people together by forcing them to put their phones down, is a punishment mechanism. If companies do want to sell them, whether people would purchase something that will definitely make their life harder is the question. What's more, as Star's comment on our project, we did fail to take into consideration the what the advancement would take place in communication technologies 100 years from now. If I were to adjust anything, I'll do something creative with the assumption of people's mobile devices, for example, a built-in chip that does AR texting. But still, the mechanism of the table will remain the same, once you disconnect the mobile device used for communication, the table collapse. The phone and the table would be connected through magnetic forces, almost like how the wireless charging works.
Documentation: Coming into being......
Step 1: Brainstorm and Plan
After we gathered and each finished reading the prompt, our group decided that we should take turns to express what interested us the most. To me, as I was reading through the prompt and the description of Connection Paradox, I felt this tension in the function that technology is supposed to serve and its real impact on people's relationships. As Sarah shared her thoughts on how family dinner is somewhere she could feel this paradox, inspiration struck me. From my own experience, a lot of the times, especially at family dinners, we're almost distracted by our phones. What if we can only start eating by putting down our phones and fully devoting ourselves to the conversation we're supposed to have? That was where the idea of this table came from. The rest went smoothly after I expressed my idea because everyone seem to like it.Then we did some research and was quite sure that there isn't a table like this. At this point, I was a bit concerned that no one will be willing to buy it as it comes out in 2124, since it's basically looking for trouble.
As we were pinning down how the table should look like, Jack used AI to portray some renderings to give each of us a better picture of what we're doing, which is pretty cool.
During the making process, everything went smoothly. We decided that we should apply the pillar-like structure for the prototype. And as we were making it, we decided that we want to attach this little cupboard ring to the back of the little phones we're making, just to suggest the connecting magnetic force.
All four of us were fully devoted in the process of making. We were constantly looking for tasks to do or thinking about some improvement.
This part went particularly well, I found it helpful to pin every details down before actually start working on building stuffs.
For the performance part, everything went naturally. We did got to the classroom earlier to rehearsal, but as we did it, we found that we are just too familiar with the dinner table scenario, so eventually, we decided to only pin down how the plot would go, but leave everything else like the exact lines for freestyle. Luckily, everything went well.

The analysis of another group......
The Title of this performance is 'COOL.' Their prototype is this machine that can interact with the passers-by. Through little games like posing and karaoke, the machine will bring the passers-by some cool breeze in a hot day or some warm air in a freezing cold winter. In the most ideal scenario, people will be able to make friends through the interaction this machine provides.
The performance was amazing. It was a lot of fun, and I do enjoy the part where people sings 'Twinkle twinkle little star together. I think it does show how the technologies can be used to create chances to socialize and bring people together. However, I do think that this kind of connection provided by this machine is quite superficial. In this day and age, we already have all kinds of apps for socializing and dating. I feel like it doesn't really help to bring people closer. We may have more friends and even easier access to them due to the advancement of technology, but we may still feel distant from them, as the quality of our social interactions is lowered.
What's more, there's this other one thing that the group is missing here. I've already seen things like this on the street. The project kind of did not get beyond our age.
I would recommend this group to be more creative about the little games. If it's something that can enhance quality interaction, it'll be more to the point of 'Connection Paradox.' What's more, they should probably be more wild over how the machine would look like, since we're talking about 100 years from now.
