The projects for Tandon Honors students in the Global Leaders & Scholars in STEM program consists of a culmination of various experiences, research, and interests related to the Tandon Areas of Research Excellence. Scholars are also required to address the NAE Grand Challenges and think about the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals when doing so. At the end of the 3 years in the GLASS Program, students have a better understanding of the impact they can have on changing the world for the better. GLASS students enter the world as globally competent and socially responsible innovators and engineers!
I am interested in the fields of machine learning and cybersecurity. I am interested in machine learning because it can make programs much more flexible and greatly influence our lives, especially with emergence large language models. My interest in cybersecurity stems from its importance as the internet becomes integrated into almost everything and cyberattacks are getting increasingly prevalent.
I am participating in the research on adversarial machine learning, which studies the security flaws of machine learning models that can be manipulated by attackers to give malicious output. Current adversarial machine learning research involves poisoning of training data, extracting the machine learning model, and crafting malicious input that can cause the machine learning model to make the wrong decision. My research focuses on the last field, creating a patch that looks naturalistic in human eyes but can cause an object detector to ignore the wearer. This helps to identify the potential vulnerabilities in machine learning models and can be used to create more robust models.
My GLASS project relates to the following Tandon Areas of Research Excellence:
Cybersecurity: Securing computer systems against malicious attackers.
Data Science / AI / Robotics: Use the collective power of data, machine learning techniques, and autonomous systems to address the issues facing the world.
My project relates to these two areas of research excellence since it focuses on the security of machine learning models. The research identifies security vulnerabilities in computer vision models, which can be used to make these models more robust.
Which United Nations Sustainability Development Goals or NAE Grand Challenges does your mission statement connect to?
Choose at least two. List them and provide a one-sentence explanation of what they are.
NAE Grand Challenges and UN SDG that my GLASS project connects to:
NAE grand challenge of Securing Cyberspace: Ensuring the security of machine learning model makes the cyberspace more secure as machine learning models are becoming the cornerstone of many services we use online.
UN Sustainable Development Goal of Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Machine learning is increasingly integrated into industry and infrastructure and is becoming a primary driver for innovation. Making machine learning models robust against adversarial attacks is crucial for embedding machine learning into more areas.
