Lessons for Curriculum Development
Traditional environmental education focuses on increasing students' knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of nature and environmental issues.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) builds upon these foundations but shifts the emphasis toward empowering students to take meaningful action.

Teacher well-being is valued: Staff lounges resemble cafés and are places to relax, get a (free) cup of coffee/tea & snacks, and to collaborate with colleagues.
Holistic learning is emphasized: All students take handicrafts— knitting, sewing, &c.— woodworking, cooking, and swim classes from a young age.
Multilingualism is prized: All students learn Icelandic, English, and Danish in school.
The shared indoor environment is kept clean: Everyone takes off their shoes upon entry and wears socks or slippers in school.
