Will I be tutoring different students each week? No, you will be tutoring the same student throughout the semester, unless either of you find a reason to change tutors/student.
How many students do we tutor? Can we tutor multiple students? Initially you are paired with one high school student, but you can ask to be paired with as many students as you have time for, as long as you dedicate at least one hour of your week to each of them individually!
If still enrolled at NYU for subsequent semesters, can tutors return to volunteer? Yes - as long as SUNS is still running the program anyone at NYU can keep being a part of it.
How will I be able to teach students without an interactive whiteboard? There are many solutions to this problem. If you have one, any writing tablet is a good option. However, we know not everyone can afford one, so there is also the possibility of using free online whiteboards and writing with a mouse (and sharing your screen on Zoom); or, you can also set up two cameras where one of them faces you and the other faces a piece of paper so that you can show what you are writing with. Reach out to us if you'd like more details on this topic!
What if my assigned student doesn't reply to my emails? Reach out to us! We will try contacting them ourselves and assign you a new student if they don't reply.
I need help creating/finding new content for my student! Check out some of our free, shared resources here.
If I selected to be a tutor, will I tutor high school subjects or advanced college courses? That depends on what your assigned student requires.
How will we know what the content necessary to prepare will be and is there any guideline for topics I should cover? We suggest that you, the tutor, ask the student which topics within the specific subjects they would like help with. We also suggest that you ask them the specifics of what they would like from you, which could vary from:
You teaching them theoretical concepts, like a mini-lecture,
Them bringing theoretical questions about a topic,
Them asking you for help on their own list of exercises,
Please note, in this scenario, if a high school student asks for help on an assignment, you cannot do the assignment for them. What you can do is help them with the content from which these excercises come and/or with other problems that they will not submit for a grade.
You find/create new exercises for them
Our tutors are never allowed to do any assignment for the high school student. These include, but are not limited to, exams, homework, and quizzes.
How should I work out the exact schedule for tutoring? You should speak to your assigned student and set up a convenient meeting time for the both of you. A useful tool to keep in mind for scheduling is the website when2meet.com.
Is it possible to hold tutoring sessions during the weekend? Yes! That's up to the tutor and student to decide when is the best time for both of you, and if agreed upon, can be during the weekend.
Would I be tutoring with a fixed schedule throughout the semester? We ask that once tutor and student meet for the first time, they decide on a schedule for the semester. It doesn't have to be set in stone, it's just so both of you can plan your weeks easily! And it is totally ok for you both to change your meeting times during the semester until you find a perfect time.
What do I do if I have any problems with my student? We have had extremely low rates of problems in the program so far, but if anything arises please reach out to SUNS at nyusuns@gmail.com; describe the issue and we will work closely with you to resolve it.
If you still have questions that haven't been answered here, feel free to reach out to nyusuns@gmail.com at any time with any questions and/or problems that you might be having.
