Drawing of Black Stache, the leader of the pirates.

Black Stache Is Coming

In this activity, students will be able to embody some general characteristics related to the character types in Peter and the Starcatcher as a fun exploration of the point of views that may appear in the play. This game is a revision of the traditional theatre game Captain's Coming.

Directions

One students will need to be "Black Stache." Black Stache will call out actions that the other students must respond to. Students who don't do the actions quickly enough or break from character will be out. Once Black Stache calls an action, the other students have a few seconds to start performing the action. If they don't perform the right action, they are out of the game.

Here is an explanation of each of the actions:

  • Black Stache Is Coming!: All students stand at "attention" (in a salute), and they can’t move from this position until the caller says, "At ease, matey!" If the students laugh or break from attention, they are out.
  • To the Ship!: All students run to the right.
  • To the Shore!: All students run to the left.
  • Man Overboard!: One student drops to one knee and another students stands behind the first, putting a hand on their shoulder. Both scan the ocean for the man overboard.
  • Crows Nest!: Three students stand back-to-back and lock arms at the elbows to form the crows nest.
  • Mess Table!: Four students sit in a circle as though they are sitting at a table and pretend to eat like they haven't eaten in days.
  • Walk the Plank!: Five students stand in a single file row with their hands on the shoulders of person in front of them.
  • Hit the Deck: All students fall to the floor on their stomach.
  • Mermaid!: each students individually thrusts out their right hip, places their right hand on that hip, waves with their left hand and calls out, "Howdy pirate!"
