Option 1 | Backstreets of the Bund Walking Tour
Join Hansong Chen, the cofounder of Urban Archeo (an independent local research group dedicated to Shanghai's urban and historical studies) on a tour looking at the backstreets of the Bund; listing selected historical buildings (some preserved and some renovated) including banks, water companies, theaters, churches, etc.
Option 2 | The Bund & Beyond Walking Tour
Shanghai’s most famous boulevard is jam-packed with stunning buildings and fascinating stories – and even more so on the surrounding streets. This tour explores the neighborhood in and around what was once “Shanghai’s Wall Street”, the tales of tycoons who financed it, the architects who designed it, and the stories of the people who lived worked here. We’ll visit stately buildings and quiet residential lanes, for a slice of Shanghai life.

Option 1 | Social Innovation Tour
This tour will start walking along Yuyuan Lu, a historic street of heritage homes, and then the group will visit two social enterprises: Bottledream, a B-corp organization that is a social innovation co-working space and digital platform, and Brook&Breeze, a grassroots bicycle shop. Two NYU Shanghai faculty, Candy & David Yang, community organizers who are part of these organizations, will lead the tour. A discussion of the evolution of social innovation in China will follow.
Option 2 | Aging Society Tour
This will be held at a social enterprise called Memory Cafe, which helps senior residents in the area by organizing immersive interactive activities to help them fight dymentia. This tour will be led by Yanyue Yuan, NYUSH faculty, who has been conducting research on multigenerational learning.
Option 3 | Tour of the Jewish Ghetto
On this tour, we tell the story of the ‘Shanghai Jews’ who fled Hitler’s Europe for the only port open to them: Shanghai. We’ll visit the the excellent Jewish Refugee Museum, and the landmarks of the old refugee neighborhood.

Option 1 | Rockbund Art Museum Visit
The Rockbund Art Museum is a contemporary art museum in central Shanghai. The museum is dedicated to being an influential, innovative, sustainable organization devoted to the promotion of projects within the field of international contemporary art.
Option 2 | Shanghai Museum Visit
The Shanghai Museum is a municipal public museum of ancient Chinese art, situated on the People's Square in the Huangpu District of Shanghai, China. Rebuilt at its current location in 1996, it is famous for its large collection of rare cultural pieces. The museum has a collection of over 120,000 pieces, including bronze, ceramics, calligraphy, furniture, jades, ancient coins, paintings, seals, sculptures, minority art and foreign art. The Shanghai Museum houses several items of national importance, including one of three extant specimens of a "transparent" bronze mirror from the Han dynasty.
