FAQ

What is your camper-to-counselor ratio and group size?

For our youngest group (3-4s), the counselor to camper ratio is 1:5. For children 5-6 the ratio is 1:6, and for children 7-10 the ratio is 1:9.

Group sizes are about 12-15 children and we typically have 3 groups at Garden Camp.

How old does my child need to be to attend camp?

Full days are offered to children who are 4 years old and up. Campers are eligible to enroll once they are 3 years old. For developmental reasons, we strongly recommend half days for campers who are age 3. However, we realize that many children aged 3 may be adapted to childcare or 3K schedules that are as long or longer than a camp day. We may reach out to you to discuss this one-on-one.

We want to make sure that your child has a good experience. Our days are full of activity and socialization, and separation from parents can be challenging for young children and their caregivers.

What activities do the campers do?

Our campers learn how to care for the plants in the garden from planting to watering, weeding, and harvesting. They learn about the process of composting while they take out their group's food scraps and investigate our worm bin.  Each week, each group cooks a recipe together. We offer other culinary projects as well such as pickling, bread baking, and soup-making. Campers also do arts and natural crafts such as dyeing, papermaking, clay arts, watercolor painting, journal-making and journaling, seedball-making, and more. Campers play in the sprinkler when it's hot out, use the camp's onsite playground, and take weekly trips to Ewen Park for nature walks. Campers ages 5+ take trips to Inwood Hill Park or Van Cortlandt Park.
