Rubrics

We have four main types of work in this course in Fall 2022: responses, assignments and the final project. My rubrics follow this general rubric that I designed for courses which use data.

Rubric for responses (short reflective writing 750-1000 words):

Missing: no response done within the time allotted.

Unsatisfactory: some writing provided, but does not address the prompt or provide any reflection on the prompt, perhaps below the word limit. The author does not, in turn, connect this writing to the larger themes of the course or to the readings. Insufficient engagement with the concepts. Does not include any visuals. The responses are difficult to find on your site.

Satisfactory: sufficient length of writing and some reflection on the prompt. The discussion of the assignment is good, but does not provide much critical reflection on the question at hand. May be linked to the ideas of the course or readings. Has visuals, but are perhaps not well linked to the writing. The responses are on your site, but are not in an easy to find order.

Excellent: The blog is reflective, critical and well argued. The blog text engages with the overall themes of the course, provides more than sufficient critical engagement and links, when possible to themes of the course. The visuals are well made, providing strong evidence for the claims made in the writing. The responses are on your site, and are listed in order as sub-pages (child pages) to a tab for "responses".

Rubric for assignments (report of results of an experiment, critical assessment, visuals 1250-1500 words):

Missing: no assignment done within the time allotted.

Unsatisfactory: some writing provided, but does not address the prompt or provide any reflection on the prompt, perhaps below the word limit. The author does not, in turn, complete the data portion of the assignment, or does so insufficiently. The data are not provided for download and are perhaps not well structured. Insufficient engagement with the concepts. Does not include sufficient visuals or they are uncaptioned. The assignments are difficult to find on your site.

Satisfactory: sufficient length of writing and the assignment addresses the prompt reflectively. The data are sufficiently created, presented and structured, but perhaps with flaws. The data are provided for download. The discussion of the assignment is good, but does not provide much critical reflection on the results and/or the process. Has captioned visuals, but are perhaps not well linked to the writing or unclear. The assignments are on your site, but are not in an easy to find order.

Excellent: The assignment is reflective, critical and well argued. The data are well described and well structured, and are available for easy download. The text of the assignment engages with the overall themes of the course, provides more than sufficient critical engagement. The visuals are well made, clearly captioned, providing strong evidence for the claims made in the writing. The assignments are on your site, and are listed in order as sub-pages (child pages) to a tab for "assignments".

Rubric for final project (data, visuals, critical analysis, reflective writing):

Missing: no final assignment submitted within the time allotted.

Unsatisfactory: The final project is incomplete. The structured data may be missing or not well formed. The text of the assignment does not do a good job engaging with the overall themes of the course and does not provide critical engagement. The visuals are poor, do not match the claims or they are missing. No credit is given to the various digitized objects which are reused in the project. The assignments not easily found on your site. There is no statement about what parts of the project each team member managed. There is no reflective paragraph about lessons learned in the project-based learning.

Satisfactory: The final project is reflective, critical and well organized. The structured data created for the project are well described and well formed, without error, and are available for easy download (or available in an appropriately shared Drive folder). The text of the assignment engages with the overall themes of the course, provides strong critical engagement. The visuals are well crafted and captioned, providing strong evidence for the claims made in the writing. Proper credit is given to the various digitized objects which are reused in the project. The assignments are clearly linked to on your site, and are easily found at a tab for "final project". There is a clear statement about what parts of the project each team member managed. There is a thoughtful, reflective paragraph about lessons learned in the project-based learning.
