Summary: Nanny is portrayed as a young fecund and beautiful woman of West African heritage who opposes oppression and waged an effective war of attrition that undermined British planter colonialism. She was an indomitable heroine that shouldered multiple significant responsibilities - from nurturing parenting, community building, and warrior to knowledge-keeper. She was a symbol of hope and inspiration to the Maroons and all those who desired liberation. Here Nanny is portrayed as a queen, because that’s what she was to her people. As is still practiced in West Africa today, she wears a styled traditional royal crown adorned with birds representing her ancestors who provide the authority, spiritual guidance and supernatural powers for her to fulfill her vision and purpose.
