Abstract
Introduction: Individuals with disabilities are not provided with sufficient opportunities to engage in tourism due to the lack of accessible and inclusive travel options. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTP) have the expertise to promote and support inclusive travel. Their knowledge in enhancing wellbeing and occupational participation positions them to play an important role in making travel and tourism more accessible for people with disabilities. However, no study has previously examined OTP's role in inclusive tourism. Methods: This study was a survey designed through New York University’s (NYU) Qualtrics, gathering information on OTP’s roles and skills in inclusive tourism worldwide. The survey included open and closed-ended questions and was analyzed through JASP for quantitative responses and content analysis for open-ended questions. NYU IRB approval obtained. Results: Therapists state that inclusive tourism is an important aspect of OT; however, the barriers to playing a greater role in this industry include limited training resources and a lack of demand from clients in order to pursue this as a full-time job. Many OTPs felt there was minimal knowledge about the needs of people with disabilities in the tourism industry. Discussion: Results built the first knowledge base of OTPs’ role in supporting and promoting participation in accessible and inclusive tourism. Implications indicate that education should be provided in entry-level programs and for practicing OTPs to support those who want to pursue inclusive travel careers. Advocacy and promotion are necessary to support the unique skillset OTPs have to offer in inclusive tourism.
