Investigating the Perceived Value of a Post-Professional OTD (Doctorate of Occupational Therapy) in the Field of Occupational Therapy: A descriptive analysis

Intro: Occupational therapy education has gone through several changes in the last few decades, moving from requiring a bachelor to masters to practice and now, potentially, moving to a clinical doctorate as the entry-level professional degree. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceived value of a post-professional clinical doctorate in the field of occupational therapy. Results of this study can also encourage post-professional OTD academic programs to reevaluate their program and determine if it is meeting the needs of prospective students. Methods: A descriptive survey was designed and administered via Qualtrics. The survey was sent to current MA and MS NYU OT students, NYU OT MS and MA alumni (2004-2019), and international MOT programs. Results: Early findings indicated that the majority of respondents (42%) indicated a possible interest in pursuing a post-professional OTD program. The participants who indicated interest and possible interest in pursuing an OTD want to improve clinical practice and leadership skills, gain advanced academic knowledge, and advance their OT careers. These respondents also expressed their interest in how the clinical doctorate will aid in their personal development as well as their clinical practice specialization. The factors contributing to the low interest in pursuing the degree were increased cost of tuition, beliefs that the degree will not further their careers, and time constraints. Conclusion: The overall findings indicate that tuition remission, financial aid/awarded funding, and distance/hybrid learning are factors that can contribute to increased interest in applying to a post-professional OTD at NYU.
