Three existing problem includes: communication paradox, AI reliance, Technological equity. From research and personal experience, we recognize that Technological equity and AI reliance is difficult to targeted by using technology. Without the help of a third party focus solely on the products it's difficult to make a cheap alternative that can be distributed to the less fortunate. If we create an device to brings the user away from AI another dependency is created. Thus solely focus on the component of the gadget, we chose to target the 1st problem.
Basing on existing function of today's technology regarding this problem, the 4 of us come with 3 possible solution: Bubble, Bracelet and our final product Connxtion.
Bubble, targeted the anonymous aspect of social media comments and platform. This products would humanize the person behind the screen, improve people connection online. The bracelet is our less dystopian take on the trend 24 hours handcuffed together, forcing people to meet face to face. Our last ideas take existing function of the phone and make it more convenient and efficient.
This process run through smoothly as all member came in with an idea in mind. However each products target a different section, our attempt to merge them create a product that's too broad. While due to its difference it's difficult to compare and choose the most ideal one blankly. After a while we create a pros and cons table to solve this dilemma.
Our final products take inspiration from common problems that hinders us from actively choosing face to face communication. Each function created to address a specific obstacle that we faced. Originally, our plan was to create a small chip that was implanted inside the user's head. Afterward we due to concern of privacy we changed our design to a small earphone. This would change afterwards to a headband to make it more clear for the performance purposes.
The design is done by James and product is made by Torico. The overall layout of these gadget are a collection of team ideas but the detail are upto the designer. This process when smoothly as each change is easily commute.
Looking back all components of our project are a team effort all elements are discussed beforehand and all members contributed. The script mainly made by Gabby and me, act as a simple outline for our performance. Due to time limitation we prioritise improv to reduce the stress of remembering our lines.
Overall the design of our artifact are straight forward, the size suggest how it should be use as a headband while the buttons guide the user to press each represent a different usage. I believe that our products partially solve the problems given, however, it only acts as an encouragement which mean that even with the gadget provided the connection paradox might not changed depends on the user wants. Our performance portrays the possible struggle then present the product to show the different, with one person personified the AI to make the actions of the technology to be clearer. Our performance have yet to fully driven away from not telling the products function to the audience. Plus do to time constraints and the fact that no technology are allowed a lot of the idea that we want to convey relies on how well the viewer can interpret from our acting.
Reflection:
Our group communication go smoothly with no arguments with each member contributes to the outline and overall planing of both the artifact and the script. Other then acting I also a main contribute of the script helping with the timeline of the acting as well as the dialogue.
They portrays dystopian reality where people turn into blob and their product is made to punished anyone that relied too much on AI. The cuff would open up a portal and transport people to a world similar to mine-craft to force them to work. This product then link you to another person and force them to work together. Without prior knowledge their acts does not display the usage of the product clearly. Perhaps if the robot "uselessness" as they being used made more clear.
