A central critique of institutions of representative democracy, both as they exist in practice and in theory, is that they are, in fact, insufficiently democratic. Should there be more democracy? What would this entail, and what might be the associated liabilities? This conference will explore the operation and possibilities of different (potentially more) democratic forms, including but not limited to forms of direct democracy, liquid democracy, electoral rules intended to promote a greater diversity of candidates, sortition, and reforms aimed at curtailing agency problems between public officials and citizens. We welcome a broad variety of empirical and theoretical contributions.
