Gas Mask Typography

Inspiration

For my visual representation, I initially planned to do traditional line art, but I wanted to incorporate the international impact of COVID-19 in a literal sense as much as an artistic one. I eventually decided to draw a gas mask, a hyperbole of the masks worn by many people today and replaced the pen lines with text that comes from various news articles, scholarship and statements made by the WHO, IMF and other websites that noted the details and effects of COVID-19.

In this course, we learn about how international law is generated and executed. Main political actors that we have taken note of in this class such as international organizations like the WHO, IMF and ICJ are groups that I have mentioned within the text of my piece. I uncovered articles that described the actions of these organizations or used these organizations as a source to gather information on political and economical changes that have erupted in countries all over the world as a result of the pandemic. Many of the darker shades of the image, where the text is more dense, include summarizations from the IMF of how specific countries and continents such as the U.S., UK, Africa, China and more, have experienced and dealt with the pandemic. Most, if not all of these countries have changed their policies on travel, their relationships with other countries, their status with international organizations, or how often citizens can leave their homes; thus, I discovered articles that detail some of these changes and included them in the piece as well. I have also included names of leaders and local individuals who were impacted or lost their lives due to the virus and actions they have taken or took before they passed.
