Conclusion
The goal of our project was to raise awareness about water waste by creating an interactive and visually engaging installation that transforms everyday water usage activities into tangible, relatable experiences. Through the integration of 3D-printed objects, tilt sensors, Neopixel Strips, and videos triggered via Processing, we aimed to educate users about the impact of their daily habits on water consumption. Our project successfully achieved these goals, as users were able to interact with the objects intuitively, triggering visual and informational elements that effectively communicated the scale of water waste.
Our audience’s response exceeded our expectations. Users, especially children, engaged enthusiastically with the project, placing objects into the holders without needing instructions and immediately noticing the changes in the LED lights and videos. Parents appreciated the educational value of the installation, highlighting its ability to make a serious topic accessible and relatable. This aligns closely with our definition of interaction: creating a hands-on, thought-provoking experience that encourages users to reflect on their behaviors.
If given more time, we would optimize the Processing code to allow videos to alternate seamlessly when multiple tilt sensors are triggered. Additionally, we might explore incorporating sound elements to deepen user engagement.
From the setbacks we faced, such as the challenges with 3D printing and coding, we learned the importance of adaptability and iterative problem-solving. These experiences taught us how to refine our ideas and processes based on real-world limitations and user feedback. On the other hand, the successes we achieved, like the smooth wiring, intuitive holder design, and positive audience reactions, reaffirmed the value of perseverance and attention to detail in turning an idea into a tangible product.
Ultimately, this project reinforced the importance of designing for the user and maintaining flexibility throughout the production process. It highlighted how even small changes can hugely improve the user experience and drive home the intended message. By synthesizing creativity, technical skills, and a focus on education, we created an installation that was both impactful and memorable—an accomplishment that we are proud of and that inspires us to tackle future projects with confidence!
