I am an international student from Istanbul, Turkey. Coming to New York for college was an intentional decision, knowing the city is a multicultural, cosmopolitan metropolis. I never felt like an outsider here! Since the summer of 2021, I've been surrounded by unique backgrounds and perspectives, which simultaneously gave me the opportunity to think deeper about my identity and how I can express it aligned with my values and environment.
I studied abroad in the NYU Abu Dhabi campus during the Spring 2025 semester. NYUAD is even more international than the New York campus, and I got to meet so many people from different nationalities. I have learned so much and got the quench to learn more about the world out there. Studying abroad here was a great opportunity for me to be exposed to stories I would never have heard through mainstream media. I also continued my journey of learning how to best represent my culture through this experience. I want to keep working on letting go of assumptions and how to best respond to assumptions about my background.
During the summer of 2024, on top of my summer research I worked as a Teacher's Assistant for NYU Tandon's Center for K12 STEM Education on the Design, Invent & Innovate (DII) course taught by Professor Khalid Ramadi. I was able to work closely with high school students coming from multiple countries on problem solving skills with an emphasis on engineering. I had the pleasure of designing and teaching my own class for a session during the two week program. The motivation and passion from innovative high school students was a privilege to witness first-hand.
I have been involved in other service projects including organizing a fundraiser following the devastating earthquakes that happened in the southeastern region of Turkey, during February 2023. Working together with the Turkish faculty at NYU as well as the now Turkish Culture Association members, with the generous donations of the NYU community, we were able to raise a substantial amount of money that went directly to a local NGO for earthquake relief. Later in 2024, I discovered an opportunity to volunteer for a meal service at the church of St Francis Xavier. I was able to work for one Sunday at the end of the Fall semester, but I am hoping to be more involved with the community by going regularly this Spring!
I am a GLASS Peer Ambassador.
In this position within my honors program I organize events for our honors and international exchange students. Through these activities, we promote engagement beyond traditional academic settings. These efforts help ensure that all students, particularly international exchange students, feel supported and integrated, positively impacting their academic success and personal development at the university.
I am the Mentorship Committee Chair of NYU Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES).
As part of my responsibilities, I mentor students who share academic and professional interests in the field. Moreover, I dedicate time every week to communicate with and assist other e-board members in coordinating club activities. These efforts are for fostering meaningful connections and promoting knowledge-sharing within the biotechnology community at Tandon and beyond.
I am the Design & Media Manager for the NYU Turkish Culture Association (TCA).
It is important for me to stay close to the Turkish community across NYU. As the E-board we plan events throughout the semester to bring students together. I work on social media management as well, responding to any questions we may receive from NYU and non-NYU people interested in our club.
I am part of Dr. David Truong's synthetic biology lab since the summer of 2022. From 2022-2024 I have been part of the Tandon Undergraduate Summer Research Program (UGSRP). My research has culminated in my senior thesis, which I am currently working on. I have gained molecular biology, stem cell culturing, genetic engineering techniques through this invaluable experience. I have also won awards on the videos I have made about my research through the program including 1st place (2022) in the Most Innovative category, 1st (2023) and 2nd (2024) place in the Most Creative category. I also presented a research poster to the broader UGSRP community at the end of every summer.
The most impactful classes throughout my academic career have been Protein Engineering, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology and the Pharmaceutical Industry, Genetics and Society, and Contextual Innovation in Society.
I am currently enrolled in the HMX Fundamentals Pharmacology online course offered by Harvard Medical School.
I took the online course Coding for Data during my study abroad semester, and learned how to use SQL and Python to code for data analysis using real-world examples, bringing data analysis based solutions to major companies.
